EP REVIEW: Distant – Arguer
Cumbrian Alt rock duo ARGUER have made quite the impression in their short tenure, making their way into a variety of playlists including BBC Introducing and Alyx Holcombe‘s ALYX PLAYS PUNK show. They have now released their debut EP entitled Distant via independent label Real Ghost Records, will this effort be their launchpad to bigger things?
Queen kicks things off with a cathartic, accessible tone that feels immediately welcoming to engage with. Whilst the lyrical content does have a slightly dark tone in places the vocals lure you in with their personable nature. Phantom also possesses that vibe of escapism. The subtle guitar work and tasteful drum beats really suit the mood they are trying to achieve.
Sequins kicks the energy levels up a notch with some slick tapping segments that slip into dreamy, graceful melodies. The emotive prose really tugs on your heart strings and is littered with memorable moments. As the track progresses it gently treads into DEFTONES territory, introducing spacy atmospherics. Revive feels like a nostalgic trip through the prime years of the indie scene. Upbeat instrumentation seeps into your veins as the commanding vocal work hits that sweet spot. A wise choice for the closing track, leaving you in a state of heightened euphoria.
Distant is a very confident statement, especially considering these compositions are constructed by just two people. You could easily envisage these tracks acquiring regular airtime on the radio and it’s interesting to see glimpses of venturing into different styles rather than confining themselves to a particular comfort zone. It will be interesting to see where they go from here.
