EP REVIEW: Growing Pains – Lazy Queen
Catchy and refreshing punk music comes in the form of LAZY QUEEN‘s brand-new EP Growing Pains. It’s another little taster of what Norwegian-New York indie rock band have got to offer, and so far, it tastes pretty good.
First track 243 New, Moon kicks off with blistering guitar riffs with the solo and bass bouncing off each other to create a wall of sound which is the perfect way to start an EP. The track has a great driven feel to it with the verses being low key whilst the choruses feature soaring guitar riffs full of effects which work really well here. Dumb MF was released as a single. It’s more of an angsty track and channels a 00s pop-punk feel. The verses feature the bass heavily whilst the guitar showcases more in the chorus. The drumming on this track is really fast but so tight it really shows just how talented LAZY QUEEN are and the effort put in is undeniable.
I See You has an electro feel to it that underlines the track with a sort of buzz that gives it that little bit more energy. It’s got a great sing-along feel to it with a chorus that includes the entire band on vocals. Then a change of pace comes with 4th Contact, as this track is a fair bit slower than the rest of the EP. It’s mostly just vocals and bass with some simple drums in the background. The guitar comes in and the song picks up a little in the chorus. Although it’s slower it makes a really great addition to the EP as it not only shows that LAZY QUEEN not only stick to one style but they can switch it up and do it well.
Option To Nothing ends this EP on a bang as this is back to reckless chaotic punk rock and it’s beautiful. The bass is heavy and the distortion on the guitars sounds like it’s going to explode. This is a big track and is going to get the mosh pits going absolutely no doubt about that. It’s a great ending to a great EP.
What LAZY QUEEN have here is just a handful of really great songs. If they keep writing tracks like this and making this kind of music then the future surely holds big things for these guys. It’s easy to see why they’ve titled their EP Growing Pains as it’s clear how they’ve grown as a band and found their footing and built on that.
