EP REVIEW: Hidden Mothers – Hidden Mothers
The UK is proving to be a hotbed of underground talent and one of the bands which you won’t want to overlook is Sheffield based blackgaze outfit HIDDEN MOTHERS. Despite only having one recorded track up to this point the band have already supported the likes of INTER ARMA, WREN and BLANKET, showing they mean business. It is now time for the release of their debut self titled EP which is due for release on September 18th via Surviving Sounds. Will this release assist in spring-boarding them to the next level?
For an opening track Beneath, To The Earth proves to be quite the emotional journey. A melting pot of vibrant melodies, caustic screams and potent drum work slickly transition through various phases alongside devilish aggression and raw, emotive vocal passages that also have their part to play. Every instrument feels integral to the overall composition, ducking and diving out of focus at exactly the right time to provide their own impactful stamp.
My Own Worth brings forth a more sombre, reflective atmosphere as subtle guitar notes echo chillingly through the initial stages. Punchy drum beats add an energised layer to the floating nature of the track. The intensity is ramped up with further instances of skin searing screaming and a heightened tempo as it progresses with the instrumentation impressively treading the line between beauty and chaos.
My Blindness, Your Burden dives headfirst into some scintillating blast beats and darkened guitar tones to give you a jolt up your spine. As with its predecessors, you are transported through stages of tantalising musicianship that evoke a broad range of sentiments and sensations, keeping you engaged through every passing moment and proving that you don’t need to be mind-bogglingly technical to offer up a spectrum of textures.
HIDDEN MOTHERS have combined a broad scope of influences that has culminated in a selection of tracks that will leave you insatiably craving more. Hitting that sweet spot between heaviness, aggression and melody takes a high level of skill to achieve and the quintet have made it seem like a walk in the park. It is a very exciting prospect to see what they could conjure up over a longer release but for now get hitting that replay button and appreciate one of the UK’s most exciting prospects.
