EP REVIEW: I Let The Devil In – Currents
You can add Connecticut metalcore rampagers CURRENTS to the list of up and coming bands that can move the genre into a new era. Packed with all the poise you’d expect a group of twenty-somethings to possess at the precipice of their career; CURRENTS are hungry for success, and the smart money says they’ll get it.
Following a style that is mostly akin to POLARIS, the quintets high octane, modern metalcore exterior sees them slot perfectly into their market. But more importantly than anything else, when it comes down to what the band offer as a musical output: they’re the real deal there too.
I Let The Devil In gives you every facet of excellence you can hope to find the genre. From Titanic sized breakdowns to spine tingling guitar slides – you’ll probably find what you’re looking for somewhere on this EP. Opening track Into Despair has a beating heart flowing through its massive riff soundscapes and vocal bursts from Brian Wille, all before culminating in a truly bone shattering breakdown.
The technical excellence of KILLSWITCH ENGAGE can be found within My Disguise, while The Rope sounds like WAGE WAR with a hint of djent. CURRENTS go running through I Let The Devil In giving you blast after blast of highlights. The quartet offer you the best of both worlds – there’s an EP here that sits well was background noise, but works further wonders when you analyse its DNA.
At five tracks (accompanied by instrumental versions), I Let The Devil In is nigh-on everything you could be looking for in a metalcore EP in 2018. Scathing vocals? Check. Seismic breakdowns? Check. Eye widening guitar work? Check. Despite being within the walls of a sub-genre, CURRENTS offer something for every fan of heavy music here in some form. Whether the band can blossom into game changers depends on the quality of their next full length LP, but if this EP is a sign of where they’re heading; expect CURRENTS to reach WAGE WAR levels of exposure soon.
