EP REVIEW: In Your Pocket – Technopolice
French post-punk band TECHNOPOLICE have just put out their newest EP In Your Pocket. Heavily inspired by the punk movement seen in Marseilles from the late 2000s to the early 2010s, the quartet are ready to show off their stubborn attitude, one to make the likes of TOMY & THE COUGARS and CALIVITIE proud, whilst also being unafraid to incorporate sounds from indie and pop music.
That combination results in an EP that can be easily summed up as fun and catchy. Opening the record is HiJacked Communication which kicks things off with fast drums that has you sat ready, immediately excited to hear what the build-up will lead to. The full band then kicks off into a punk instrumental that feels a little relaxed, but in a cool, calm and collected way that remains bouncy and fun.
Almost on the complete opposite end of the spectrum, next track Ticket To Mars uses both distorted and electronic rock elements that culminate in fast beats that you will easily find yourself bopping your head along to. The next two songs, the title track and Mediterranean Boy, carry on that sentiment in both being fun rock songs with catchy beats that you can’t resist tapping your foot along to.
Things change gear once again with Ted – a much more moody and melancholic sounding track with dark guitar strumming that creates a slow, droning rhythm and leaves you ready to ponder on the deeper points of life. We’ve also got to appreciate any song that uses the phrase “eat the rich” in its lyrics.
The final two songs return to the realm of fast, bouncy punk tracks. Danke contains elements that sound like what would happen if QUEENS OF THE STONE AGE and THE LIBERTINES were to write a song together. Further praise must also be given to its psychedelic sections that create an atmosphere of being in your own science-fiction scene. And lastly, there’s Mort Vivant, a short but sweet track the perfectly captures the punk spirit, sung entirely in French. In a way, it feels reminiscent of GREEN DAY’s St Jimmy, yet for the most part it is entirely their own signature sound.
Overall, In Your Pocket is a fantastic punk EP to put you in a good mood. Whether that feeling is to have a dance, or make you go to start an anarchy, who knows? You’ll be feeling happy either way.
