EP REVIEW: Luna – AAWKS

It’s been a busy few months for Ontario natives AAWKS; having released their debut album (Heavy On The Cosmic) in June and their enchanting split EP The Eastern Scrolls with AIWASS back in August, the heavy psych trio return with their new EP Luna. Packed with their trademark eerie atmospheres and lusciously heavy fuzz-drenched riffs, it is an EP worthy of the dedication to the Roman goddess of the moon. 

Channelling the millennia long obsession that cultures have had with the moon, its cycles and its mysteries alongside the age old fascination with the unexplained, Luna is a strange EP for all the right reasons. Alongside their heavy new track The Figure, the Canadian trio have put their twist on the A FLOCK OF SEAGULLS 1980s classic I Ran alongside one of PINK FLOYD’s most whimsically haunting tracks, Julia Dream. 

With bewitching melodies, enchanting harmonies and earthy bass grooves, the band explore these esoteric concepts in a unique and interesting way. Carrying on from the sound they established on their debut, AAWKS’ mystical vibe comes alive once again across these four tracks. This is especially demonstrated on on their new track The Figure, a cosmic and ethereal piece that transports you to a shadowy realm of esoteric knowledge.

The I Ran cover is a particular highlight, with it slowed down and injected with fuzz and psychedelia it puts the song in a completely new and otherworldly light, while Julia Dream is just as uncanny as the original. At the end of the EP you can hear the power of their live performances with All Is Fine (Live From The Pøølhaüs Feb 2022).

Luna is an ethereal dose of heavy psych, and it caps off a successful year for AAWKS which sees them readily climbing to the upper echelons of the heavy psych pyramid.
