EP REVIEW: Mending Breaking – Introvert
After a good reception to their 2016 EP, Old Taste, Australian punk rockers INTROVERT burst back into the music scene with their new EP, Mending Breaking. Having made their mark with their first release, the band went on to support the likes of AFI, TROPHY EYES, BALANCE AND COMPOSURE and HELLIONS, and it is clear from this EP, that they now have their sights firmly set on headlining themselves.
Consisting of six songs, this new EP leaves the listener wanting more due to catchy rhythms, guitar and bass melodies. The opening track, Find A Way, captures your attention with its atmospheric and calming intro, consisting of smooth synth, quiet sound effects, a great riff and softly spoken lyrics, it’s almost calming enough to ease you into a refreshing eight hour sleep.
This serenity doesn’t last long though as the song then changes direction completely when the drum beats make an entrance, and the vocals become much more coarse and impactful. This hints at the idea that the songs represent the journey someone goes through when dealing with demons in your head, as vocalist Audie Franks has described the EP as being inspired by this theme. The song starts out quiet and tranquil before quickly transforming into this loud and strong sound, almost like how someone may feel when their mental health is suffering.
Using the same riff and drums as the end of the previous song, the EP flows beautifully into the next track, Dreamers. These transitions make the EP a pleasure to listen to in the intended order. The mix of melodic backing vocals with more aggressive lead vocals really make for an interesting sound from this band, and one that many listeners will want to hear more of.
The title track, Mending Breaking, is arguably the heaviest song on this EP due to its fast paced rhythm and bold vocal style. The overall sound is good, and one thing that INTROVERT is clearly able to create is memorable tunes by using a mix of well thought out riffs, effective drum beats and a variation of vocal styles. The hooks in the EP are pretty solid and make for easy listening, but can be a tad similar at times, yet this does not take away from the fact that this is a well thought out and well executed release. The use of the songs to create literal and metaphorical meanings shows the true talent within INTROVERT‘s repertoire, and will gain them many more fans in the future.
