EP REVIEW: My World – Karen Dió

My World is the music industry comeback for KAREN DIÓ. It’s been two years since she last released music. Although her EP is only eleven minutes long in total, it cuts to the chase, covering topics such as mistrust and false idols and fragile male egos. As a bilingual, Brazilian-born woman who is now living in the UK, and is growing a global audience, My World seems to be an appropriate name for an EP by the rising rockstar. The world is her oyster.

The title track starts off the EP, and it sounds like it has stepped out of the soundtrack to a movie from the early 2000s. It’s loud, brash, and brimming with confidence. This goes for the entire EP. Even though the songs are all under three minutes long, they never seem rushed or unfinished. Stupid is a high energy, guitar-driven song, whereas Poor Man is a slower-paced grunge song. This helps the EP not sound too repetitive and breaks up the pacing. On the other hand, 3am is a riot of guitars and drums that sees Dió sing some of the fastest vocals in her career.

The final two songs, So Funny and Sick Ride are both hyper-energy songs. Even though the majority of the EP is like this, the production on it means that each song stands on its own. Furthermore, despite only being eleven minutes long in total, the EP does not sound rushed or unfinished. In fact, the only issue is that the lyrics on the final two songs are a bit repetitive near the end. On the other hand, the rest of the EP’s lyrics are brilliant at managing to convey the messages in such a short amount of time.

Overall, My World by KAREN DIÓ is a fantastic EP by one of the most exciting singers in the rock scene. Despite its very short runtime, Dió leaves no stone unturned during the songs. The lyrics are fantastic, although on the final two songs, they get a bit repetitive. But the production on all the songs mean that they not only work on their own, but also as a coherent body of work. The high energy of the majority of the songs mean that My World has a fast pace, but this does not mean that it sounds rushed or unfinished. This is a music industry comeback that puts KAREN DIÓ on the map.
