EP REVIEW: One Day This Pain Will Subside – Ocean Of Another
Founded in 2022, OCEAN OF ANOTHER are a Croatian metalcore band who deal with the harsh realities of being human and cover a wide range of issues, including addiction and mental health. This is evident in their new EP One Day This Pain Will Subside, where across five songs the band open their deepest wounds, covering topics such as pain, loneliness and trauma to create a raw and honest listening experience. It is an important EP that is needed more than ever.
Against a background of synths and fast-paced guitars, the lyrics in opener Embrace The Darkness are raw, focusing on the desperation that loneliness can bring, but the choruses are uplifting, reminding the listener that they are more than their darkness. It is an idea that might seem like it has been done to death over the past few years, but OCEAN OF ANOTHER give the positive message important context within their lyrics.
This continues throughout the EP, from the guitar-driven rock of I Am But A Memory, to the electronic metal of Terraform, to the fast-paced Shift + DEL. One notable thing about the EP is how coherent it is, even though all of the songs sound drastically different. Each song shows a new side to the band, and yet it all feels so natural. They are clever enough to only use two wide genres – metal and electronica – so that there is consistency throughout the tracks, and the production holds thing together too.
Overall, One Day This Pain Will Subside is a fantastic EP. Whilst it does unfortunately fly by due to the fast pace, the rawness, cohesiveness and experimentation all make up for it. OCEAN OF ANOTHER bring positivity throughout, but give it crucial context by acknowledging the struggles of life and ultimately send an important and impactful message: have hope through dark times.
