EP REVIEW: Phase θ – Andromedous
Electronic music and guitar noise has long been an often confused combination of sounds. Whilst conceptually similar, the rhythmic repetition of electronic music is almost antithesis to the structural security of alternative song writing. THE PRODIGY were among the first to fuse the sounds, and since then bands like THE ALGORITHM have pushed the boat out even further with regards to what is capable with certain genres and sounds. Now firmly half way through the year, there is a newcomer to the dub-core sound that seems intent on making as big an impact as possible – ANDROMEDOUS.
ANDROMEDOUS are the next thing to crash land on earth far from outer space, and their combination of early noughties dubstep and metalcore guitar is comfortably one to keep your eye out for. On their debut EP Phase θ, the trio layout a clear statement of intent bringing together a fusion of sounds with a healthy, healthy dose of aggression thrown in for good measure. Infestation pulses rhythmically whilst the early KILLSWITCH ENGAGE inspirations float through the rest of the mix. Having Josh Armitage of IMMERSE on drums has meant that ANDROMEDOUS benefit from a real beating heart at the centre of their sound, and one that drives their electronic carnage with a real intensity.
Ragga Riddim proves the troupe to be in touch with genres even more further afield than dubstep, and their command of song structure to enhance their dynamics is easily one of the best things about Phase θ. Transferring from a mid tempo stomp through to a more pit friendly section, like in Alpha Centauri, shortly after the song makes an attempt for your throat with a jarring breakdown. Whilst there is a lot to like here, it is undeniable the benefits a vocalist would bring to ANDROMEDOUS. When the songs find themselves caught in a cyclic loop, like the closing Neon, having lyrical content for listeners to further cling onto will make what is already an EP with truly memorable moments even catchier than it already is.
Across the 6 tracks Phase θ offers, it is abundantly clear that there is more to ANDROMEDOUS than meets the eye. To simply write the band off as another electronic experiment would be a huge disservice, considering the clear influence from the glory days of metalcore and also modern hardcore. The ideas are here, and a more cohesive album will allow the band to highlight the dynamics that really make them stand out. For now, Phase θ is a brief glimpse into an exciting new project that isn’t afraid to mix elements most wouldn’t touch with a barge pole. For anyone looking for something different, out of the ordinary, and maybe even intergalactic, then look no further.
