EP REVIEW: Prodigal Sons – Unseen Faith
What do you get when you mix deathcore, metalcore, and fierce head-banging breakdowns that make you want to throw yourself around the room? A hell of a good time that’s what. Danish five-piece UNSEEN FAITH are here to deliver just that with their new EP Prodigal Sons.
Opening with title track, the atmospheric intro accompanied by tech elements builds the tension. Don’t get comfortable though, as this track drops straight into some meaty and aggressive vocals. Backed by some well-timed rhythm mix ups to add drama, this is one hell of a heavy hitting, foot tapper of a song. When performed live a few crowd killers are likely to make themselves known, flailing around to these riffs that are grinding in a good way.
Starting off with a pop-esque intro, Love Hunger somehow still gives off sinister vibes. This suspicion is confirmed when not a second later we’re treated to some harsh vocals mixed with the ever-so-welcome sound of blast beats. It’s pretty clear that this section completely wipes out any of that former calmness from the intro – UNSEEN FAITH did not come to play around. We continue on into a meaty drop before being thrown back into the blast beat section, this time shadowed by a half time that draws out the groovy rhythms and riffs.
Building the volume gradually, the low-tuned riffs of Hindsight are enough to get any crowd going. The metalcore influence can really be heard in these guitars, and even some elements of the vocals. If you want a good breakdown, look no further, for this whole song will have you head-banging along. The mix of this song is super interesting, and the effects used on the vocals in some parts such as electronic distortion is really cool. This track keeps you guessing, which is always a great time.
Deadly Potential feat. SIAMESE wastes no time, not letting you even take a breath before it throws you in at the deep end. The welcome clean guest vocals of Mirza Radonjica bring another layer to this amalgamation of sound, adding the cherry on top of a great mix of elements. This fast paced track makes impact not only in its beastly rhythms and riffs, but also through the malicious lyrics and vocals.
Overall, UNSEEN FAITH definitely deserve praise for their combination of deathcore and metalcore sounds. Prodigal Sons offers a seamless mix of the two, and clearly we are being schooled by this Danish quintet.
