EP REVIEW: Rumination – Wheel
Finnish/English progressive metal outfit WHEEL have built up some serious momentum over the years and last year’s Resident Human significantly hastened their ascent. They have recently announced their addition to the ranks of InsideOut Music and to mark this occasion they are treating us to the triple-pronged EP entitled Rumination, which is due for release on November 10th.
Blood Drinker wastes little time slotting into some hefty grooves and alluring melodies. The punchy tempo hooks you in right off the bat. Technical flourishes are reeled off in precise fashion, it is a shame the track has to end.
Synchronise blends diverse orchestration seamlessly, offering up a plate of pure escapism. The prose executed by frontman James Lascelles possesses such an intoxicating quality that you hang off every word he delivers as the relaxing acoustic tones flow gracefully through your ear canals. Impervious unleashes commanding bass hooks, allowing subtle atmospherics to peruse the periphery. Before you know it the track bursts into life with impressive intricacies. Vibrant layers paint complex but enticing imagery.
Rumination serves as a perfect entry point for those who may not be used to the innovative mastery WHEEL have at their fingertips. The short snappy tracks leave you gasping for more. Just as they feel like they are gaining momentum they quickly depart but this is quite a cunning game plan. Whether these songs are a taster of a full-length release or simply an appetising stopgap is yet to be determined but they are certainly a welcome addition to their repertoire.
