EP REVIEW: SH!T YEAH – Between You & Me
After the release of their acclaimed 2021 album, Armageddon, Australian quartet BETWEEN YOU & ME are back with their long-awaited new EP, SH!T YEAH. This EP is the first one that the band have released independently, and is the result of a few years of hard work and determination. After they released their single Nevermind, in 2023 – which earned acclaim from fans and critics – the band went on a US tour in support of KNUCKLE PUCK and REAL FRIENDS. BETWEEN YOU & ME are poised to be a part of the next wave of pop-punk, and this six-track EP could very well be the turning point.
KNUCKLE PUCK return the favour by featuring on the opening song of the EP, Kill My Vibe. The easy-going pop-punk song is perfect for a summers day, and its sing-along chorus is an instant earworm. But whilst KNUCKLE PUCK are the feature, this is unmistakably a BETWEEN YOU & ME EP.
The high energy of the first song continues over into the second and third songs, In The Middle and Nevermind. Yet, they are all distinct in their individual sound. Although this energy dips a little during the verses of Super Good, the chorus more than makes up for it.
Whilst the high energy of the songs are great – and perfect for summer – the high energy does start to wear thin after a while. Thankfully, closing track Virus mixes things up with an electronic-rock sound, which also hints at future experimentation from the band. Furthermore, it breaks up the repetitive high energy – even though it comes right at the end of the EP.
Pacing-wise, the EP is fast-paced as the songs are very short. However, as this is a pop-punk EP, that is ok because pop-punk is known for being fast-paced. But it does mean that the EP does sometimes sound like it is one big song, especially as the sound for the majority of the songs is similar.
Overall, SH!T YEAH is a brilliant EP by BETWEEN YOU & ME. It isn’t perfect as the high energy of the songs does get repetitive, even though the songs themselves manage to have an individual sound. However, it is the closing song that truly breaks out on its own. But the EP is a perfect one to play in the summer and the band prove that they have it in them to create an entertaining and fun record. If you are looking for something to add to your summer playlist, then SH!T YEAH by BETWEEN YOU & ME is the one for you.
