EP REVIEW: Split – Frøkedal / Sâver
Norway is fertile ground for transcendental musicians, and this unique split EP between FRØKEDAL and SÂVER is eerie, intriguing and mystical. FRØKEDAL is a folk singer whose haunting vocals leave an indelible mark on you, their poignant tones echoing long within your memories. SÂVER are veterans of the Norwegian sludge scene. The atmospheric sludge trio fuse unearthly, celestial softness and furious, visceral anger. On this unique EP each artist presents a reinterpretation of the other’s song, SÂVER opting for Shot-Put and FRØKEDAL choosing I Vanish off of the former’s debut album. Even though both artists are at different ends of the spectrum, both bridge the transcendental middle ground of the other’s artistic sound.
On Shot-Put, SÂVER strip back the heavy guitars and opt for an atmospheric approach more in line with FRØKEDAL‘s original artistic vision. Ghostly vocal melodies float over low, celestial drones as synth shimmers and gentle drums add intrigue and colour to the song. There is a uneasy yet ethereal peace that surrounds the track as it gradually evolves to reach its climax before fading out with a spooky warbling drone.
FRØKEDAL reimagines the crushing SÂVER song I Vanish as a stripped back, poignant and plaintive atmospheric folk song. Her haunting vocals illuminate the lyrics in a seraphic manner, whilst still retaining the angst and darkness of the original song. It is punctuated by traditional sounding instruments alongside innovative melodies and harmonies that add a new layer of depth and a fresh perspective to the song.
Even though it is only two tracks, there is so much at play across the duration of this collaborative EP. Both artists experiment successfully with the songs they have chosen, simultaneously putting their own stamp on them whilst retaining some of the attitudes and musical values of the other. With FRØKEDAL and SÂVER bridging the gap between genres, this little EP is innovative and inspiring, making it a must listen for fans of music that transcends and defies musical boundaries.
