EP REVIEW: Struck Dead – Trivium
TRIVIUM require no introduction. They have achieved pretty much any accomplishment any band could ever hope to tick off their bucket list, yet they still continue to fire on all cylinders with the vigour of a bunch of upstarts craving to impress. During their illustrious Poisoned Ascendancy run alongside BULLET FOR MY VALENTINE, the quartet became particularly inspired after revisiting one of the most pivotal albums in modern metal history, thus Struck Dead was born. Due for release on October 31st via longtime label Roadrunner Records, this collection is guaranteed to go down a storm.
Bury Me With My Screams rushes out of the gates like a rampaging bull. Scintillating screams and swift shredding are closely followed by an anthemic chorus sequence. As the track progresses, it begins to break down into intense drumming flourishes, impressive lead runs, and neck-snapping grooves that cleverly slot integrate for maximum impact.
Struck Dead (Pain Is Easier To Remember) pulls no punches, swinging for the fences with a hefty onslaught of heaviness. A powerful melodic burst cuts through the crushing aggression. Dive bombs, savage drum rhythms, and infectious hooks also leave an explosive impression. If you ever need a track to raise the energy levels and sprinkle some spice into the pit then you’re looking at it.
Six Walls Surround Me exhibits an abundance of nostalgic flair that brought TRIVIUM to the dance in the first place. Masterful riffing, vibrant sing-along segments, and an inviting structure that neatly ebbs and flows to keep you on your toes. As the track approaches the midway point, it unleashes some of the most ridiculously catchy guitar work you’ll have heard all year. Just as you are becoming effortlessly immersed in its splendour, the fun has sadly come to an end.
If TRIVIUM wanted to leave their adoring fanbase screaming and shouting for more, mission accomplished. Struck Dead is the ideal morsel to whet the appetite, yet leave you immediately eager to dive into another cycle of this blockbuster trio. Each piece stands proudly of its own accord but when combined with its compatriots it possesses a combustible quality that results in an injection of adrenaline. Whilst there is a sombre note in the air knowing this will be drummer Alex Bent‘s final contributions to the band it is also heartwarming to know he has certainly left his mark on their considerable legacy.
