EP REVIEW: Talk About Forever – Like Father
Orlando-based indie-punk emo outfit, LIKE FATHER, have put out their second EP Talk About Forever. The EP itself aims to show off their growth since 2020’s No Such Thing As Home and, in all honesty, they are pretty successful in that matter.
Opening track, and lead single, In My Head, opens with a strong grunge-like guitar track before taking us on a story about, in their words, “toeing the line between disassociation and self-sabotage.” Before even knowing the meaning behind the track, you find yourself already getting it, you already understand; everyone is familiar with those feelings of anxiety and not fitting in, so you turn to shots of whiskey. A bit too close to home to be honest. It’s that type of track you can picture jumping around in a crowd to with tears in your eyes; a real-life embodiment of the ‘this is fine’ meme.
It’s during second track, Paradiso, that you can hear a lot of their influences shining through. LIKE FATHER have said that they are influenced by the likes of THIRD EYE BLIND, MICROWAVE and WEEZER; in fact, you’d be forgiven if you thought you had accidentally switched to WEEZER on first listen as the guitar and vocal style are so similar.
Midnight is a standout track on the EP. It’s another track where you can picture yourself standing in a crowd making the devil horns and headbanging, yet once again you find yourself with tears in eyes. It takes us through the emotions of wanting someone, you put so much in, but they give so little back so once again we so hit the drink. LIKE FATHER, do we need to talk? The breakdown at the end is exceptional, it makes you stand their whilst going “oh yes!” as all of the feelings come to a head.
Concluding with Talk About Forever is a little disappointing, however. Whilst it continues the same themes and story that we’ve seen throughout the EP, (having a deep chat have with that person) the guitar track is a little dull to be honest; in fact, it sounds like whining. A shame that we have a weak track for an otherwise solid EP.
In a summary, Talk About Forever is not the most stand-out EP that’s been released this year but it’s something that you’ll keep coming back to. It’s like a comfort blanket that you need when you find yourself needing a good cry or to find someone who understand exactly what you’re going through. Talk About Forever is a, mostly, solid EP that you’ll find yourself listening to at three in the morning smiling with tears in your eyes.
