EP REVIEW: The Cliché – Cuecliché
After bonding through their mutual love of pop-punk heroes such as BLINK-182 and SUM 41, London based pop-punk trio CUECLICHÉ were formed back in 2016. They got to work pretty quickly, releasing their debut EP One Last Chance only a year later. Following on from this, their second extended play Look At The Pictures was revealed in 2019. Three years later and they are about to release their upcoming third EP The Cliché. As a currently unsigned band, CUECLICHÉ have recently released three tracks from the EP as a teaser of what’s to come: The Last Dance, Not The Only One and Dear You.
The first track on The Cliché is The Last Dance. It starts off with a somewhat typical pop-punk style riff before upping the ante with a progressively quicker melody. The dual vocal duty works in CUECLICHÉ‘s favour, really showing the talent of vocalists Jake Leigh and Terry Rytz. Leigh also shows off his skills as a solid guitar player throughout the song. However, the lyrical content and chorus just don’t do anything for us.
Next up is Not The Only One. Featuring a fantastic opening guitar riff, this song reminds us instantly of older SIMPLE PLAN tracks. The emotion really comes through vocally and is complete with a very memorable chorus. It is great to see the band change things up this quickly. It shows that they are capable of doing both energetic and raw material and is definitely the best song on the EP thus far.
Dear You is the third song on the EP and it sees the band return to their more high-energy sound. This is a track that will definitely grow on you – by the second chorus we were tapping along. The instrumentals are equally as excellent as the previous single too. The closer is This Life. This track definitely has potential, but it just isn’t an instant hit, unfortunately. It has all the key fundamentals it needs to a great song, but sadly it just doesn’t deliver.
The Cliché is definitely not a bad record. Considering this is only their third EP, CUECLICHÉ are clearly still trying to figure out their own individual sound within the genre, but we are sure that will come in time.
Rating: 6/10
The Cliché is set for release on November 17th via self-release.
