EP REVIEW: The Hope Of A Spark – Atreyu
Metalcore heavyweights ATREYU are back with a four song EP to quench their fans’ thirst. Exploring themes of “reflection and rumination on the pressures, pleasures, and pains of modern life…”, The Hope Of A Spark delves into some heavy hitting subjects, hoping to come out the other side stronger than before.
Opening up with the single Drowning, we’re introduced to some atmospheric chanting which quickly transitions into a fast-paced riff backed by some vicious drum beats. Then the magical melodics of Brandon Saller enter the picture in the first verse, singing about feeling trapped in your own head and feeling helpless. An intensely catchy chorus ensues, begging to be sang along with at the top of your lungs. The feeling of being isolated really comes across in this track, needing to scream to get the frustration out. Well, this track is definitely perfect for that purpose.
God Devil starts off slightly slower, with a distorted electronic tone which melds into an intermittent beat. We’re treated to some aggressive unclean vocals later on top of this, which gradually builds to a angelic vocal section by Saller. The electronic rhythm throughout makes for some bouncy verses which contrast nicely with the more toned down chorus. A riffy guitar solo then enters the picture, a proper classic rock take. Ending with a faintly played piano, it’s a classy way to finish the track.
Now, if you need a good shout, Capital F would be a great choice. Embodying the anger and frustration of the whole EP, this track stands out as one hell of a headbanger. The electronic elements paired with the aggressive chorus makes for a hard-hitting sound which you are unable to escape. Again, the lyrics explore the idea that everything isn’t as bright and cheery as it seems, acting as a form of therapy for those who need to express their anger.
The last track on the EP, Watch Me Burn, has been said to be “a song about being cleansed by fire,” being resurrected from the ashes, growing, and learning from our challenges. The use of string instruments in the opening to this track adds a nice juxtaposition to the impactful riffs and rhythms that shortly follow. Again, a nice sing-along chorus makes for a catchy piece. It definitely has a stadium rock feel, but mixed with some classic ATREYU traits, it makes for a good time.
Overall, The Hope Of A Spark brings some fun flavours to ATREYU’s sound, expressing a range of emotions that make the listener think about their own life, as well as acting as an outlet to express your emotions. A very catchy collection of songs that is sure to be a crowd pleaser.
