EP REVIEW: The Trawler – Eat Your Own Head
Since their formation in 2019, the Norwich alt/noise rock band EAT YOUR OWN HEAD have been a part of the exciting new wave of heavy music. They released their debut EP, Hank, in 2020, and their debut album, Neck-Deep In The Blyth, in 2022. The quartet have played all over the UK, supporting the likes of THE PHYSICS HOUSE BAND, SUGAR HORSE and LUNCH MONEY LIFE, and now they’re ready to continue their growing success with their new EP The Trawler.
Across four songs, the band prove why they are one of the most exciting new talents in the UK. Whether it is the opener Chest Pains, whose mixture of spoken word, screams, and alt-rock instrumentals make it hard to place into a neat little box, the experimental rock of Downriver, or the indie-grunge of Hardwired, the band make it hard to pin down their sound, as even the vague descriptions of the second and third song don’t quite do them justice.
Whilst the songs all fit together, despite all being out of the box sound-wise, that doesn’t mean that the EP is perfect. For example, Chest Pains could do without the extended instrumental section which drags the pacing of the song down, and whilst the closing title track is still interesting, it doesn’t sound quite as experimental as the other three songs, as it jumps between indie and rock without really branching out of those two genres as much as the others do.
Ultimately, The Trawler is another fantastic EP by EAT YOUR OWN HEAD, who prove once again to be one of the most exciting new bands in the music scene. The pacing is great and this is a great starting point for those looking to get into EAT YOUR OWN HEAD, as well as being more than enough to satisfy longtime fans.
