EP REVIEW: Utopia – Of Our Design
Grab all your generic expectations of metalcore and toss them into the mosh pit, as Southend slashers OF OUR DESIGN have arrived to show you something you never expected.
The Essex quintet’s concept EP Utopia showcases a breathtaking approach to metalcore merged with the endless possibilities of electronic backing, rousing an almost ’80s-esque retro vibe building the foundations for a catastrophic conflict of two great vocal tones. Exploring the idea of a protagonist stretching to reach a utopian blissful paradise far beyond the struggles of earthly existence, the EP somehow juggles its numerous individualities with ease.
Throwing the fresh vibe of exuberant keyboards around the room, We Are The Flame ignites its dual vocals to create an intense, roaring furnace. In front of that hearth stand axemen Haydn Rivers and George Ranger, punching out the devastating tones of Do Or Die and pulling off a phenomenal tricksy solo through Wayfarers – metalcore guitarists rarely work as hard as this to frame the relentless vocal war buzzing over their heads. While Ranger doubles up as the clean vocals laced with a generous helping of venom, Alex Shand delivers the most menacing uncleans this side of doom metal.
Almost emo-esque cleans meet guttural screams at their most consuming and addictive throughout Citadel, bringing their larger than life dystopian concept to the fore. The captivating At The Gates, with its glittering solo and vibrant energy, stands as an album highlight that neatly defines this band’s intentions in one fell swoop. As far as metalcore album closers go, Angels & Demons keeps to its word with a towering atmospheric presence and a strong electronic core that would shout its name from the rooftops if it could. Framed by the effortless coherence of Smoke & Mirrors, OF OUR DESIGN never rush their newfound genre hybrid, allowing it to evolve and grown in its own time.
Crafted with the foresight and wisdom of a band thrice their age, Utopia is an astounding effort displaying their innovative potential to the fullest. OF OUR DESIGN will ring their unique notes around the hallowed metal academies of the UK before long.
