EP REVIEW: Void Below – Void Below
The phrase ‘It’s grim up North’ has become etched into the DNA of the UK, particularly because of its unpredictable climate. Cumbrian quartet VOID BELOW are hoping to harness that mentality and inject it into their upcoming self-titled debut release which is due on May 20th. Will this effort be the launchpad to bigger things?
Initium commences with chilling, clean tones that leave an ominous feeling in the pit of your stomach that something may be lurking around the corner. The intensity begins to simmer whilst the twisted harmonies continue to instil an unnerving mood. The Inevitable picks up the pace with crunchy riffing and commanding growls. The groove ridden rhythm and lyrical delivery are particularly infectious. It won’t be long before it has you bopping along despite its varying tempo shifts.
Ancient Deity will certainly have the hairs on the back of your neck tingling with its blood-curdling roars that usher in a vicious wave of blast beats. The tone transitions between a trudging, doom-infused stomp and maniacal riff work to keep you on your toes. The runtime of this track is considerably longer than any of its counterparts but seems to vanish as it immerses you in the captivating narrative. Collapse Ov Dominion opens with an excerpt from John Carpenter‘s In The Mouth Of Madness before diving straight into another round of hefty, aggressive instrumentation. Carnage meets chaos as the track descends into wild passages of crazy lead sections and pummelling drum beats.
Void Below is a little rough around the edges but that adds to the charm. Relentless heaviness runs rampant and provides plenty of exciting moments along the way. The ebbing and flowing nature of their delivery adds an additional layer of violence to proceedings. It will be intriguing to see what the next step is for this promising collective.
