Fit For An Autopsy: The Bigger Picture

Deathcore heavyweights FIT FOR AN AUTOPSY have very quickly became one of the flagbearers for the entire genre. Their impeccably high standard of releases has been justly rewarded with bigger and better opportunities including huge headlining tours in support of freshly released rager The Nothing That Is. An album which is filled to the brim with skull crushing intensity.

“This record kind of picked up where Oh What The Future Holds left off, which was written during COVID. There were a lot of questions about what was going to happen next and lot of energy around the fact that we didn’t seem to be heading in a great place,” explains main songwriter and producer extraordinaire Will Putney. “Fast forward a couple of years and I was picking this record back up it felt like I wanted a title that felt present. I like writing about what’s going on in the world and I use music as an outlet for that. I didn’t want to look too far ahead and the title The Nothing That Is really summed up what I wanted to say as far as the current state of the world is concerned. A lot of self-destruction and societal issues. It’s a more frustrated record, the world had changed a bit since I first started writing which gave me a lot more ammo. There’s never a shortage of shit to write about!”

This release is their seventh full-length studio effort which marks a release almost every two years since their inception. If you could bottle up Will‘s seemingly boundless creativity it would undoubtedly fly off the shelves! “I just like writing music and I don’t believe there is a reason to wait anymore. If people are interested in the band and you’re interested in making music then it works for everyone. If my favourite band was giving me frequent releases with a consistent level of output I’d be excited and I want to try give that to people.”

All members of FIT FOR AN AUTOPSY are firing on all cylinders for this release as they look to have really found their groove. Frontman Joe Badolato sounds more devastating than ever and is the perfect accompaniment to the furious onslaught on display. “We’re always looking to try new stuff and I feel like Joe is getting more confident as a vocalist,” explains Will. “He’s learning what works for him and where his strengths are, so am I when I’m writing so it’s becoming a lot clearer where we could lean with certain aspects and how we could make it impactful. He did a great job in picking his spots and executing them this time.”

The Nothing That Is opens with the massive, stomping riff of Hostage and very rarely relents throughout. One of FIT FOR AN AUTOPSY‘s biggest strengths is their ability to sustain the same level of energy and vigour throughout their releases and this is an aspect which Will and his bandmates pay particular attention to. “I still really like the whole album format. I don’t think we’ve ever really been a band that pins our hopes on singles. There’s a lot going on in a FIT FOR AN AUTOPSY record and we don’t want to reduce songs to just three or four minutes so I want to always treat it as one larger piece. As far as thematics go it needs to be engaging and rewarding throughout the full run time and I really enjoy records that have surprises and twists and turns as it goes along. It’s an important part of the process for me. I think our fans appreciate the extra layers of detail and they’re the people that deserve to hear it. We don’t really care about being popular or following certain trends and our approach has been working well for us so far. We have confidence in our system.”

With his never-ending list of projects and responsibilities as a producer, Will opted to stand down from live duties with FIT FOR AN AUTOPSY with talented duo Tim Howley and Pat Sheridan holding the fort. Despite his live involvement with freshly unveiled project BETTER LOVERS his stance has not changed. “Of course I’ll see them perform at an awesome show or some big ass festival and wish I was out there with them but they’ve put so much work into touring as a five-piece now and I don’t want to throw a wrench into that,” admits Will. “After playing so many shows you get into a rhythm and I’ve no intention of getting in their way. I haven’t played a FIT FOR AN AUTOPSY show in such a long time that my connection with playing the songs live is kind of diminished now. I’m attached from a creative standpoint and that is just as satisfying for me.”

Speaking of BETTER LOVERS they released their debut album Highly Irresponsible on the exact same day as The Nothing That Is. Needless to say Mr Putney has had his hands full in recent weeks! “This week has definitely been a tough week for sure because I’m active with both parties and the ongoing plans. Luckily we have really good teams on the labels who are killing it and have been helping everything get to the finish line. This has been one of the craziest years of my life for sure and I’m still kind of working out what my maximum limit of things I can handle at once is but I’m getting more comfortable in saying no to things or telling people things will be done when they get done and they’re usually respectful of that. I don’t see it getting easier any time soon but I just have to get smarter! I don’t take it for granted that I get to do music for a living, particularly extreme music and that is why I go so hard because it’s a very finite and fixed career length and path so I want to take the cool opportunities as they come along. This is the life I’ve chosen which just so happens to come with a crazy schedule.”

The Nothing That Is is out now via Nuclear Blast Records.
