Ice Nine Kills’ Spencer Charnas: My Five Modern Horror Classics
Picking ICE NINE KILLS frontman Spencer Charnas‘ brain on his favourite horror movies of all time seems like a nearly impossible task given his all encompassing love of the genre; as shown on the band’s brand new album The Silver Scream 2: Welcome To Horrorwood. Of course he loves all the classics, but when moving into the modern era, there are so many films that have made just as great an impact in his life that may not get as much love or recognition. So naturally this was the era we at Distorted Sound asked him to choose from, and he gratefully obliged to provide us with five films from 1999 and later that should be in the collection of every horror fan.
American Psycho (2000)
“It’s undeniable how great of a movie that is. Obviously the book was phenomenal and very controversial in its time. It’s such an interesting story about how that film was made. Not many people know that Oliver Stone and Leonardo DiCaprio were originally attached to the project and thank god Leo decided to do The Beach and that opened the door for Christian Bale. DiCaprio is a great actor but Christian Bale is Patrick Bateman.”
Idle Hands (1999)
“A great movie that unfortunately had a really bad stroke of luck in that it came out the same month that Columbine happened and I personally think the film would have been a commercial hit had that not happened. As soon as the school shooting happened, people were weirded out by the film and it got buried. I’m glad to see it became what it should be, which is a cult classic.”
Hostel (2005)
“This movie really took it up a notch in the gore and gross out department. I think it was a really original film that I had never seen. I had never seen that European setting before; taking American kids that were my age at the time, and putting them in this unknown world in Eastern Europe where shit hits the fan.”
My Bloody Valentine 3D (2009)
“I recently got to know the guy who wrote the film, Todd Farmer. He’s a really cool guy and a great writer. It was directed by Pat Lussier, who basically went to the Wes Craven school of filmmaking. He was Wes’ right hand man on all the Scream movies and edited them all, and I think that’s part of the reason why I love the work.”
Hatchet (2006)
“This is a really cool movie directed by a guy from Massachusetts named Adam Green. It stars Kane Hodder who is the best Jason, and the only guy to have played him more than once. It’ a great throwback to 80s slasher movies with some of the most mind boggling practical effects I’ve ever seen by the late John Carl Buechler.”
The Silver Scream 2: Welcome To Horrorwood is out now via Fearless Records.
