INTRODUCING: Holy Fawn
When the iconic Randy Blythe from LAMB OF GOD hails your release as his album of the year you know you’re onto something special. This is exactly what happened to Arizona based quartet HOLY FAWN following the release of their first full length effort Death Spells back in September 2018.
Their intoxicating combination of soothing ambience and crushing intensity immerses you in a captivating soundscape which is so easy to become lost in. The instrumentation shifts and branches off down a multitude of different paths making it practically impossible to define their style in any other way but unique. “Death Spells is a combination of natural and dream realms and the pain we harness in our waking lives. It’s a journey into the otherworldly to learn more about ourselves” explains frontman/guitarist Ryan Osterman. “We spent two years recording it and kind of driving ourselves mad over trying to capture exactly what we had in our heads and how to make it flow perfectly. In the end, I think it was a huge relief to just be finished with something we really poured our entire selves into. We had hoped it’d do well and we had kind of been doing a really vague promotional campaign but it kind of took off once it was released. All of us kinda freaked a bit cause we had people like Riley Breckenridge (THRICE) and Randy reaching out to us and it was just surreal to even be on their radar.”
It is never a simple procedure to create an album with such elaborate textures and the inspiration for their creative output stems from a wide spectrum of influences. “Musically, our influences kind of range all over the place but when I was growing up” states Ryan. “I found this artist from Germany called ARIEL KILL HIM that like heavily impacted me as a kid. It was like super washy, and spacey, and just sad as hell. I really connected with that. It kinda floored me and altered my trajectory to bands like THIS WILL DESTROY YOU, MOGWAI, and eventually bands like BEACH FOSSILS to sludgier stuff later on. Lyrically, a lot is drawn from nature or dreams that I’ve had. I just like creating places or describing things I’ve experienced.”
Death Spells has just been re-released via Holy Roar Records, with their support HOLY FAWN are hoping to broaden the awareness of this release and get the material out on the road. “We just really want to hopefully reach a wider audience and share this album, that’s very close to our hearts, with other people and hope they connect with it as much as we do. At the moment, we’re looking to do a significant run of the US this fall and visit some new places we’ve been eager to play. Maybe we’ll have a new song or two as well.”
