INTRODUCING: Homebound
HOMEBOUND have been turning heads with their dark, emotional brand of pop punk. Comprised of vocalist Charlie Boughton, Tom Mellon and Chris Wheatley on guitar, and Joe Aspell-Beaumont on bass, the four-piece from Farnham started out in 2017, quickly producing their first EP The Mould You Build Yourself Around.
The band toured throughout the year, grabbing attention of many. Not wanting to miss a beat, the quartet have kept momentum flowing with the recording for their second release, More To Me Than Misery. Their record name’s are a precursor to the provoking subject matter of the songs themselves. “Absolutely, life is a continual process that we learn from through the good and the bad,” vocalist Charlie Boughton comments on the new EP. “More to Me Than Misery draws on the many pitfalls when searching for happiness in love and life. Last year was possibly the best and worst of my life for the very same reasons and you begin to fear the very things that once made you who you are. Although the name of the record draws from quite a poignant lyric, I wanted the title of the record to be seen as a positive outcome to the hardships I experienced.”
While the issues HOMEBOUND aim to tackle in their music have always been at the forefront lyrically, the angle of their sound has changed over the last couple of years as the group have developed. “We definitely wanted to push on towards a darker and possibly heavier sound with this record,” vocalist Charlie explains. “We’ve always felt we’ve sat on the darker side of the fence when it comes to this kind of music but we wanted to assert that with these songs which I felt we have done considerably. Bands like THE USED and UNDEROATH played a big part in the music we grew up listening to and we wanted to write a record that reflected our music taste.”
For such a young band, their efforts to keep mindful and aware of their sound is admirable, rather than catering to the masses, honesty lies at the heart of HOMEBOUND‘s creative process. “Every band has their own way in going about writing but we tried to take on a different mindset when we went about this record in comparison to anything we’d done before. Honesty is a strong theme throughout the record, not just lyrically but I feel it transpires right through to the very core of everything we did with More To Me Than Misery” Charlie notes. He goes on, “we treated the whole process like it was the last thing we might ever do as a band and I believe that’s made for the best collection of songs we’ve written to date. There’s certainly no hiding the fact that it’s a sharp change from the previous HOMEBOUND but it’s definitely the closest representation of the band we want to become.”
For those looking to catch the band live, they are embarking on their first headline tour through the end of August into September. Here, fans and newcomers can witness the energy and passion HOMEBOUND have to offer. “This is the first headline tour we’ll have done considering all our other touring has come as a support band. It’s a little nerve-racking but it does allow for some creative freedom in being able to explore our setlist a little more with having a longer set to play more songs.”
