INTRODUCING: Our Divinity
Bright sparks OUR DIVINITY are one of Liverpool’s shinning new talents. The five-piece found each other in February of 2018, when the four musicians, Danny Boland (lead guitar), Gary White (Rhythm guitar), Dan Smith (Bass) and Sean Carson (drums) found their lead singer Zara Saunders.
Instantly catchy, it’s clear what makes OUR DIVINITY a stand out band. “It has got to be the open, ‘airy’ and modern sound we bring along with the energy we bring to live shows. When you have Danny and Gary jumping into the audience, it’s something memorable to anyone who sees us live. Along with that, we’re people who love to speak with anybody who supports us” says the band. “We enjoy giving back to those who enjoy what we do.” In terms of energy, OUR DIVINITY really wants to push you as a listener straight into their world and what they’re all about. When asked what was the most enjoyable part of performing, they answered perfectly, “The first song. For us, that’s the part of the set in which it’s like the “We’re here” moment. It’s the track which is vital to give the audience an understanding of what the rest of the set is going to sound like.” If there’s an answer that explains a band’s drive, it’s this.
Not ones to rest on their laurels, after getting to preform with the likes of SIKTH, OUR DIVINITY only want to push themselves further with their musicality & skills. “You don’t realise until you play alongside these guys (especially SIKTH), how insane of musicians they actually are and what they bring to the table. After playing with them, it really does drive you to bring yourselves to their level no matter how long it takes. Also, just a short note, when we opened for SIKTH, and LOATHE (who also influenced us and are from Liverpool) played too and all those guys are insane musicians and so down to earth, genuine people behind the insane performance they bring every single time.
The tone of OUR DIVINITY’s EP, Paralysis is brimming with massive, drum filled songs that bounce around your head and uplift through their lyrics. Packed with riffs that sway and slide around, it’s clear that OUR DIVINITY already have a signature sound of their own.
The contrast between the high energy music and the often hard hitting vocal content is mature past this first release, and gives a great perfection into the future of the band. “A lot of the tracks are based on personal or past experiences like relationships, mental health struggles but some of them (unreleased tracks) are about a ‘made-up’ story. However, we tend to aim for listeners to make their own stories and meanings from them. It’s such an amazing feeling when somebody comes up to you after a live set and tells you what a certain track means to them. That’s what we aim to create every single time.”
In terms of writing their first EP, the band have come to this full-bodied end result in a pretty organic way. “We normally write at somebody’s house, but, one day, Gary came into the practice room with a two-chord pattern and a week later, Remedy was born. However, Paralysis came about when Sean and Danny we’re having a bad day where everything was going against them so they decided that the day was going to end up being productive, which brought about Paralysis – or it’s working title 10th of June. In the end, all tracks were constantly rewritten vocally a week before as behind the scenes, there was some unrest with how they were sounding. Despite the unrest, we feel as though it turned out to be a solid, small three-track EP.”
As a young band starting out, it’s important to keep focused on a goal and to evolve as times change. To push themselves seems to be in the very nature of OUR DIVINITY. “In terms of direction, we look to keep bettering ourselves constantly and consistently. However, in the case of projects or events, we’re hoping to have some support tours booked as well as more shows scattered around the UK and also hope to release some new music, which we cannot wait for!”
So, ultimately, what is it that makes this group of friends want to stand together and push forward into the world of music? “For us, it’s the passion to see people enjoying the material we release. There’s so much effort, hard work and determination that goes into creating these tracks from everyone involved and nothing makes us feel better when we receive positive feedback on a track we wrecked our minds to get right.”
