InVisions: Changing The Narrative
Yorkshire’s deadly offering to the metal-core scene are back and louder than ever. With hauntingly poetic lyrics, and sickening riffs that’ll promise to split your head, INVISIONS have triumphantly launched their latest album into the ether.
The poster child for pandemic-production done right, Deadlock is a hefty monster of an album, providing listeners with an ear-shattering 11 tracks. Carefully curated over the course of several months, INVISIONS have managed to create the ultimate track list for the old-school metal-core lovers and those who love music that is just plain heavy.
Appearing to have gone from strength to strength over the long production time, Deadlock locks into your mind in a different way to their two previous albums. Gifting listeners with a unique, ambitious experience that showcases the band’s best.
“I think we’ve really hit the nail on the head. Granted we are always going to strive to be better in every way, but I think we all agree that this record just hits different. This album is a hell of a lot more personal and emotive in terms of lyrics but we’ve also made it about the riff, you’ll be scrunching your face up head banging one minute and then the next you’ll be singing the chorus until your lungs hurt!” Says guitarist Ben Ville.
Although the band’s previous albums may have had a different sound, Ville notes how the extended writing and production processes became a blessing, lighting the way for the more personal narrative Deadlock has amplified.
“Writing music can be a bit of a journey of self-discovery, going in we had no idea what we wanted to write the album about but that clean pallet really allowed the songs to breathe and find their own life. I think the pandemic helped and played a big role in shaping the record as all of a sudden we didn’t have a deadline, it gave us ability to almost start fresh and figure out how we wanted the record. No stone was left unturned!”
This exploration of a more emotive path allowed INVISIONS to create interesting concept tracks such as DVPE and Dealer. Two separate songs which tell the same story from totally contrasting perspectives. Talking about this vocalist, Lucas, makes nods to rappers J.COLE and JOYNER LUCAS, whom while not themselves in the metal scene, have played a crucial role in the influence of these two songs.
For many other bands the cons of several lockdowns, and the lack of socialisation between band members and fans over the past two years may have been a disadvantage. However, INVISIONS have managed to come out on top, demonstrating that near perfection can be achieved if you keep working at something. Lucas himself notes how several songs would not have made the cut, if they didn’t use the long gestation period to keep working at them. The four minute long track, Half Life is a solid example of this.
“We had to re-write the chorus so many times that it became known as ‘the problem chorus’. It got to a point where we were considering axing the track but when we finally nailed the chorus it was so satisfying! Now it kind of acts as a reminder to just give it time, stick with it and you’ll get there in the end!”
Aggressive and violent in their pursuit to make music that they also would enjoy, INVISIONS have created a record that truly thwarts their previous pieces. Title track, Deadlock, is a particular stand out, with some moments sounding somewhat reminiscent of ARCHITECTS‘ All Our Gods Have Abandoned Us. The sheer talent that is showcased throughout the number is impressive, loud and down right in your face. The musicianship, as well as the overall quality demonstrates a peak into the album that is sure to attract fans in droves.
Now that INVISIONS have finally found their sound and come full circle with Deadlock, the upcoming April shows will surely be another high for the group. Performing in both London and Leeds, the sets are assured to be brutal, with powerful riffs and impactful vocals.
“We’ve been out the game for a couple years now due to the pandemic and the light at the end of the tunnel is getting a lot closer. Our recent UK tour was a little taste of what’s to come but album release shows are always next level! These shows for us are so important and we want everyone attending to have a night to remember. We’re ready and we’ve got two years of no shows to make up for. We just want to be touring as much as we can. We want to go to places we’ve never been. Revisit places we’ve loved and just continue to grow and share the record with as many people as possible. We said at the start of this band that if we are doing it, we do it once and we will do it properly, and that’s what we will continue to do!”
Deadlock is out now via self-release.
