Jo Quail announces new album ‘Notan’
British cellist and composer JO QUAIL has announced her seventh studio album.
Titled Notan, the album from the cellist is the follow-up to 2023’s Invocation / Supplication, and is scheduled to be released in September this year, via Adderstone Records.
Named after the Japanese concept exploring the interplay of light and dark, Notan presents a deeply personal journey through contrast and polarity. The album features solo performances on cello, electric cello, and piano, with each track recorded live in full takes. All sound design and modelling is handled by Quail herself, forming the distinctive sonic identity that defines her work.
The album’s first single, Rex, is a reimagining of a piece that originally appeared on her 2010 debut. Speaking about the track, Quail says, “some of you who’ve been with me since the early days might remember it first appearing back in 2010. It’s a piece I’ve returned to in live performance, and over time it’s evolved and reshaped itself. This version is something quite different: a reimagining that feels both familiar and entirely new. I’m really proud to be releasing it now — and yes, it’s over 9 minutes long (a bold choice for a single, I know!).”
