LIVE REVIEW: Deez Nuts & Trash Talk @ The Underworld, London
Australian hardcore crew DEEZ NUTS returned to the UK for a run of dates co-headlining with TRASH TALK. Bringing along CAPSIZE, BRUTALITY WILL PREVAIL and BOUNDARIES to support meant this certainly wasn’t going to be a quiet evening in London.
BOUNDARIES provide a fun start to the evening. Their energetic blasts of hardcore punk are nothing this crowd won’t have heard before but it definitely gets the job done. The riffs and beatdowns have plenty of crunch to them and the punk elements help add more pace to it. Their early set time means the room is fairly empty whilst they play but they manage to get a small pit going. It’s a solid start and helps get the early arrivals in the mood.

BRUTALITY WILL PREVAIL really kick things up a level. Opening with The Path brings the moshers out and is an immediate reminder why BRUTALITY WILL PREVAIL are still one of the most respected UK hardcore bands. They deliver 30 minutes of crushingly heavy riffs and the doom elements of the newer material really help mix things up. One moments they are delivering fast riffing to get a circle pit going before switching to the sludgiest beatdowns of the evening.

CAPSIZE struggle a bit tonight especially following on from BRUTALITY WILL PREVAIL. They lean more heavily on melody than any other band tonight which certainly isn’t to say they aren’t heavy. XX recalls early POISON THE WELL but it just doesn’t seem to completely connect with tonight’s audience. There is still a few die hard fans down the front singing along but unfortunately the rest of the room just don’t seem as interested. Still there are positives to their set with new material sounding very promising.

With it being time for the first of the co-headliners the Underworld was now packed out for TRASH TALK and what followed was 45 minutes of complete anarchy. Lee Spielman conducts the chaos from both on stage and on top of the crowd without the slightest care of what actually goes on. TRASH TALK short blasts of frantic hardcore are the perfect soundtrack for all the chaos and violence unfolding in the crowd. Even with the seemingly never ending stage dives, Lee continuously demands more from the crowd. They might not come round often now but when they do, TRASH TALK really know how to make an impact.

Sadly for DEEZ NUTS it seemed like a lot of people came along for TRASH TALK and left before the final band. It was a shame to see the room empty out a bit but it was still far from empty and everyone left seemed to be a die hard DEEZ NUTS fan. Now DEEZ NUTS certainly don’t deliver the most sophisticated music, even by hardcores standards but they are undeniably fun. With almost every song being about drinking and just having a good time they create a real party vibe and vocalist JJ Peters charisma really shines through.
It might all be a bit juvenile but songs like Popular Demand and Band Of Brothers are catchy and have almost everyone singing along. They never match the insanity of TRASH TALK but then it feels like they are never trying to. Instead it just feels like they want everyone to have a fun time. Despite being upstaged slightly by TRASH TALK, DEEZ NUTS definitely provide an enjoyable end to the evening.
