LIVE REVIEW: The Dangerous Summer @ King Tut’s Wah Wah Hut, Glasgow

With their first tour of the UK since 2019 in support of their sixth studio album Coming Home well underway, THE DANGEROUS SUMMER made their much anticipated return to the hallowed ground of King Tut’s Wah Wah Hut in Glasgow. An 8pm start time on a Monday night is never an easy sell, but there was a buzz in the air heading up the famous King Tut’s staircase.

Tasked with warming up the cold and damp Glasgow crowd are Denver pop-rockers THE BRKN. They take to the stage and following what appears to be technical issues, take no time at all getting the crowd’s attention. With a mix of spiky riffs, soaring vocals and a unique bass groove, the Colorado natives make themselves known to those slowly filling out the room. Frontman Jacob Cade’s infectious enthusiasm has everyone hanging off his every last word. Between his excellent riffs and fantastic vocals he is a natural frontman. Throughout their half hour set THE BRKN showed just what has gained them hype over the past year. As the set continued, their influence from THE 1975 became more clear with this culminating in the track Be Cool from 2021 EP Come Outside. While the crowd seemed resistant to being entertained this early on THE BRKN made their best effort and definitely gained some fans in Glasgow.

With the room starting to fill up it is the turn of Leeds-based pop-punk quintet BEAUTY SCHOOL to face the Glasgow crowd. The band gained a lot of notice this year after opening up the Rock Scene Stage at Slam Dunk Festival and have been riding a wave of momentum ever since. Vocalist Joe Carbera explains that this is their first time in Glasgow and wastes little time in letting them know what BEAUTY SCHOOL are all about. Big riffs and catchy pop-punk hooks grab the attention of those in attendance and gets people moving. Bassist Dan Shaw takes over the reigns of stage banter as we find out that Carbera is suffering from Laryngitis and was close to missing the show. This doesn’t get in the way of the performance and his belting vocals are on top form throughout the set. After several hits from their debut album Happiness the crowd get involved with a sing-along to Pawn Shop Jewels as the band start to wind down their set. Carbera reminds the Glasgow audience that they will be back in November opening for THE WONDER YEARS before closing out their set in style and leaving the crowd buzzing for the main event of the evening.

By now the room is packed and there is a real excitement in the air as the crowd awaits Maryland rockers THE DANGEROUS SUMMER. Nearing veteran status in the scene having been around since 2006, they have built a strong fanbase all over the world and Glasgow is clearly no different. Opening with Blind Ambition we are reminded of exactly what the band can do. Strong vocals and tight musicianship has the Glasgow crowd in the palm of their hand from the off. Vocalist AJ Perdomo reminds the fans of their last visit to the city and expresses his love for King Tut’s.

The surprise of the night comes as a mosh pit opens up during Catholic Girls which caught most off guard. A great mix of old and new songs meant that the energy did not go anywhere for the rest of the night. The crowd went wild for the classic Where I Want To Be which had everyone off their feet. THE DANGEROUS SUMMER were clearly up for a party as they asked the Glasgow faithful to call out from work and come out after the show. Perdomo hopped the barrier for a sing-along during Bring Me Back To Life while THE BRKN’s Jacob Cade joined on bass. Cade’s energy was a fun contrast to the chilled vibes of the song and rest of the band.

The crowd erupted for Where Were You When The Sky Opened Up and nearly drowned out Perdomo which was an amazing sight. Closing out strong with the anthem Fuck Them All followed by the hugley popular Permanant Rain, sweat was dripping off the walls of King Tut’s. THE DANGEROUS SUMMER put on a fantastic show and reminded people why they are a must see band when they rock up to your city.
