PREMIERE: Blacken The Sun – Elyrean
Distorted Sound is delighted to premier the new single from ELYREAN!
The track, titled Blacken The Sun, is the title track form the Staffordshire-based thrashers debut EP, releasing early 2019. Speaking on the new single, front man Asa Jones, had this to say: “The song is the middle part of a story (that the whole E.P will tell), where the previous anger and hatred has now been unleashed. The song describes the destruction the character is witnessing and his initial emotions during that time. The song, musically, was purposefully written to be the fastest, shortest and most destructive of the lot, to go hand in hand with the lyrical theme and drive home the feeling we wanted to go for. It’s our fastest and thrashiest song to date so we believe we’ve achieved what we was aiming for!
When writing the lyrics, Daryl [Payne, drums] and I tend to sit together and write them. Daryl is really good at structuring the lyrics and coming up with vocal patterns whereas I’m better at writing the lyrical concepts and actually writing the lyrics. It’s a great balance as we can both play to our strengths and collectively write the best lyrics for each song. I’m highly influenced by the writings of H.P Lovecraft so there are nods to his works in this song. Another big lyrical influence for this song was the Conclusion Of An Age album by SYLOSIS. That album is pretty much deals with what we’re describing in this song so it helped us when thinking about how to maybe structure certain parts or how to describe something. One last personal influence I really have to mention is Trevor Strnad from THE BLACK DAHLIA MURDER, as his lyrics always have a visually descriptive style to them and that’s something I really wanted to do, to make people be able to visualise the events happening and almost imagine that they are the character within the story.
Our musical inspiration mostly comes from SYLOSIS, DEATH, REVOCATION and AT THE GATES, though this song is definitely more earlier SYLOSIS and REVOCATION inspired. We really wanted to have something that people would listen to and say ‘that’s insane!’, the same way we do when listening to Teras by SYLOSIS or Scorched Earth Policy by REVOCATION. It had to be the fastest, thrashiest and hardest thing we could write at that time so we definitely pushed ourselves writing it!”
Blacken The Sun gives a solid taste of what ELYREAN are capable of. But what can you expect from their debut EP? “A lot of different things,” says Jones. “There’s a lot of varied influences in this EP, with each song acting as a separate chapter to the story. Every song has it’s own unique feel to it, all bringing something new. We wanted to make it a bit unpredictable, so people wouldn’t just think it’s another straight forward thrash album, because it’s really not. Though don’t worry, we’re a thrash band so it has plenty of thrash to satisfy, we just also wanted to include other things and also wanted to really push ourselves as songwriters. The EP was mostly written by Daryl and I, though we’ve has help from past and current members, and it’s taken a long time to write, during which we’ve grown as musicians and as songwriters so you will definitely hear that progression we think. Expect the unexpected is probably the best way to describe it!”
