EP REVIEW: Caravans To The Outer Worlds – Enslaved
There is no disputing the impact that ENSLAVED have had on heavy music since their inception. Decades have passed since they embarked on their journey, releasing a swathe of fantastic albums across that period as well as spawning numerous side projects that highlight the immense talent, work rate and emphatic musical understanding of the band’s members. Last Friday saw them take another step in that journey, releasing the new EP Caravans To The Outer Worlds, and it stands as yet another fine addition to their priceless discography.
Stylised as two main tracks and two ‘Intermezzos’, it’s a whistle-stop reminder that here is a band still at the height of their powers, as they rattle through their familiar formula of proggy death metal without needing to cross the 20-minute barrier. It’s heavy and dark, but in true ENSLAVED style it’s also measured and concise, as much an extension of last year’s Utgard as it is a release in its own right. It begins with the title track, which quickly rifles through energetic riffs and powerful drumming before vocalist Grutle Kjellson begins to unleash familiar manic shrieks to cement the heavy feel of the track.
This remains the trend until we are led into Intermezzo I: Lonnlig. Gudlig. which oozes ethereal mystery and uneasy soundscape. It is a dense experience that sees them continuing to dabble with ominous electronics which are drizzled across the track like a fine dressing. It’s as eerie as it is impressive, showcasing musical skill and songwriting ability in equal measure. Ruun II – The Epitaph begins with acoustic guitar before becoming a cauldron of progressive wizardry and cinematic darkness. Intermezzo II: The Navigator concludes affairs as a more pacey number, evoking thoughts of classic prog rock while always maintaining the ENSLAVED sense of identity.
It’s incredible that after so long and so many releases, ENSLAVED are still capable of whipping up intrigue. Caravans To The Outer Worlds is a beautiful little piece of storytelling, and although it feels over in a flash, it makes a lasting impression and holds merit as a release in its own right. It is the perfect put-me-on to the next full length; appetites will be whet and ENSLAVED will continue to fight on as one of the most important metal bands the world has to offer.
