Top 10 bands you must watch at ArcTanGent 2026
Ah, ArcTanGent. Since its humble beginnings in 2013, the festival has spent the last 13 years establishing itself as the UK’s essential hub for math rock, post-rock, prog and a whole tapestry of weird and wonderful sounds. Supported by a diehard community, on the cusp of 2026’s event, it feels like we’re on the cusp of something special. The last ArcTanGent at the beloved Fernhill Farm before relocating to the Cotswolds for a bigger and bolder 2027, it’s fitting that the bill curated for the Somerset swansong is absolutely stacked. Across the festival’s four stages, here are ten bands you cannot afford to miss.
MØL – Bixler, Thursday – August 20th
Danish blackgaze outfit MØL have had a superb 2026 and it feels their place atop the Bixler stage on ArcTanGent‘s Thursday billing feels deserved. January saw the release of DREAMCRUSH, a stunning and bold forward step for a band that have been a main character in metal’s current era. Their third record sees the band push their multi-layered, walls of sound to even greater heights and live, it’s set to be a triumph. Material like Young and Garland – both taken from this year’s album – are sure-fire contenders to resonate, while the band’s previous material is tried and tested, having won adoration in their previous two appearances at the festival. Live, MØL are exhilarating and we don’t expect anything less with their imminent headlining slot.
OATHBREAKER – Main Stage, Saturday – August 22nd
Every iteration of ArcTanGent has boasted special moments. Performances and bookings that have gone down in ATG folklore and been fundamental to the festival’s longevity. And 2026’s billing is no different, epitomised by the hugely anticipated return of OATHBREAKER. The Belgian band’s sound is complex to pigeon-hole; an amalgamation of post-metal, black metal, hardcore, and shoegaze. The result is visceral, intense and brutally vulnerable, encapsulated by 2016’s masterpiece Rheia. A decade after that record’s release, and eight years after the start of their hiatus, the stage calls once more and we can expect the Main Stage on Saturday afternoon to be heaving for OATHRBEAKER‘s exclusive, and eagerly anticipated, return to UK stages.
WILDERNESSES – Bixler, Friday – August 21st
ArcTanGent, just like other genre-specific catered events, prides itself on platforming just as many emerging gems as it does with established heavyweights. WILDERNESSES are one such band. Landing the opening slot on Friday’s Bixler stage, the London-based band have enjoyed a breakout year, with debut album Growth providing a fantastic introduction to the quartet’s emotive alternative rock. On record, there are many beautiful moments that longer long after they fade, and if the band perform to the standards we hope for at ArcTanGent, it could make for something very special indeed.
OVERHEAD, THE ALBATROSS – Yokhai Stage, Wednesday – August 19th
Ireland’s OVERHEAD, THE ALBATROSS occupy a league of their own. Seamlessly crafting an enormous musical tapestry and able to exude the most emotive responses from their audiences has established the Dublin-based band as a unicorn in the post-rock space. 2024’s I Leave You This – a staggering musical odyssey of life, death and the whole gamut of emotion that accompanies the journey every single one of us takes. Returning to the festival just 12 months on from their brilliant performance on the Main Stage to play their part in kicking off 2026 on Wednesday’s pre-party billing, we anticipate a thoroughly gripping performance with the likes of Your Last Breath and Paul Lynch drawing many, many tears. It might not be a suitable substitute to much needed rainfall to appease the drought, but it’s a start.
CHELSEA WOLFE – Main Stage, Thursday – August 20th
The undisputed queen of dark and gothic, the arrival of CHELSEA WOLFE has been a long time coming. Six years to be exact. Originally penciled in to headline 2020’s event, the year of the pandemic, now, six years on and WOLFE finally arrives at ArcTanGent. Armed with plenty of new material from 2024’s She Reaches Out to She Reaches Out to She and the upcoming The Dark (which coincidentally releases the day after her headlining set) and a impeccably strong and varied back catalogue, Thursday’s headlining showpiece looks destined to be one that was worth the wait.
SVALBARD – Yokhai Stage, Wednesday – August 19th
As the saying goes, all good things must come to an end, And for SVALBARD, their journey draws to a close at ArcTanGent 2026, as devastating as it may be. The tail-end of 2025 and much of this year has seen the Bristol-based band rolling their farewell tour across the European mainland and home soil, and it’s fitting that their last-ever performance as a band will take place at a festival so close to their home town. A staple at the festival having performed numerous times over the course of its history, on their fourth (and final) appearance at ArcTanGent, we can expect an incendiary, gripping and triumphant set, one that reflects their tiresome work flying the flag for British metal these last 15 years.
CULT OF LUNA & JULIE CHRISTMAS – Main Stage, Saturday – August 22nd
As genuine heavyweights of post-metal, it’s not surprise to see CULT OF LUNA sit atop a ArcTanGent lineup. Having headlined the event three times in 2022, 2019, and 2015, you might be asking why would the band occupy one of our spotlight slots. On merit alone, they are more than deserving as the band are fucking brilliant, but 2026’s headliner isn’t your typical CULT OF LUNA show: a 10 year celebration of Mariner. 2016’s collaborative album with JULIE CHRISTMAS is regarded as a modern masterpiece, with rapturous acclaim across the board, as the two distinct artists created something that is as unique as it is evocative. We’ve seen it’s jaw-dropping power live once before, back at Damnation Festival in 2016. A decade on and ArcTanGent 2026 will see the two parties reunite for a very special performance of the album to close out Saturday’s action, and indeed the festival itself. If there was ever a fitting show to conclude ArcTanGent‘s time at Fernhill Farm, let it be CULT OF LUNA and JULIE CHRISTMAS joining forces to bring the colossal weight of Mariner to life.
PSYCHONAUT – Main Stage, Thursday – August 20th
Belgian trio PSYCHONAUT have been riding some serious momentum these last few years. 2022’s sophomore offering, Violate Consensus Reality, kickstarted the wave but last year’s World Maker, the band’s third album, underlined PSYCHONAUT as a wicked proposition in modern post-metal. Displaying a musical tapestry that is anything but static, their music is alive, vibrant and frequently metamorphosises itself and live, it’s a treat on the ears. Landing a nice afternoon slot on Thursday’s Main Stage, we can expect the Belgians to leave ArcTanGent with their heads held high, buoyed and ready to continue riding the wave at the forefront of forward-thinking heavy music.
ARCANE ROOTS – Main Stage, Friday – August 21st
Eight years ago and ARCANE ROOTS broke many a heart when the Kingston upon Thames-based band disbanded. But now, fellow fans, rejoice for ARCANE ROOTS are back! Having already performed an exclusive reunion show at sister festival 2000trees, it’s now the time for ArcTanGent to welcome the quintet back, and it’s looks set to be something special. Expect a display of math-rock intensity, alluring atmospherics and a vocal display from Andrew Groves that will leave the hairs standing on the back of your neck. New comeback single A Wave, Across The Sea dropped at the start of the year, hopefully ArcTanGent will experience further glimpses ahead into the future of ARCANE ROOTS.
LEECHED – PX3 Stage, Saturday – August 22nd
At the tail-end of the 2010s, British metal was experiencing a purple patch. Really, when we roll the clocks back a decade and see the names of bands pushing through, it’s genuinely quite astonishing. And among them is LEECHED. Occupying a soundscape of bleak and nasty, the Mancunian trio had forged an intimidating presence in heavy music circles. Just take a cursory listen to any of their two records and you’ll see what we mean. Whether its 2018’s debut You Took The Sun When You Left or 2020’s To Dull The Blades Of Your Abuse, LEECHED are not for the faint heated. Now, five years after a period prolonged silence, they return in what is anticipated to be one of the heaviest sets of the weekend.
ArcTanGent will take place at Fernhill Farm on August 19th-22nd 2026.
