ALBUM REVIEW: I Love You – Teen Jesus And The Jean Teasers
Rising Australian punk rock band TEEN JESUS AND THE JEAN TEASERS have finally released their debut full-length I Love You. The band, formed by four high school friends in 2015, first came on the radar in 2019 when they released their debut single which caught the attention of Triple J. Following this they made many appearances at festivals, released their debut EP Pretty Good For A Girl Band last year, and had two sold-out shows in London earlier this year.
How did they achieve all of this? Well by putting out incredible music, with their debut album only solidifying their reputation as an unforgettable punk band. Opening track I Used To Be Fun kicks things off with a style that has resemblance to THE STROKES and lyrics that are too relatable to the point that they almost feel like a personal attack on you in regards to growing up and dealing with the oh so horrifying world of responsibilities.
And that energy never lets up, whether a track is upbeat, moody, or slow, you will find yourself excited throughout the entirety of I Love You with your attention piqued. Whether that excitement is used for anarchy or perhaps to have a therapy session is up to you.
The band offer moments of being heartfelt and in love, as heard in the title track that’s a declaration of affection towards your partner and vice versa, even with all your odd quirks, and Lights Out that’s a solid rock anthem detailing a moment of intimacy. Yet in that same breath there are songs that are raw and vulnerable in terms of heartbreak and confusion, such as Never Saw It Coming that details the aftermath of a break-up where you juggle the feelings of anger and sadness, and Your House My House which admits to the growing feelings of love in such an open way.
Of course, there are also tracks that are just pure energy where you’re more than happy to jump and sing along to, and there are a lot to choose from. Highlights include I Don’t Want It which is a fast punk track that would easily fit within the Scott Pilgrim Vs The World soundtrack, and final song Kissy Kissy that oozes plucky confidence that almost demands you sing along to the anthemic bridge filled with “da da da” harmonies.
There’s nothing more to say other than to demand that you go and listen to I Love You yourself. This record oozes confidence, chemistry and coolness, and it’s only their debut.
Rating: 9/10
