Colorblind: Now Is The Right Time

A debut album is the launch pad for most bands. For some, releasing singles years before that first record is the best way to garner hype. The multi-genre spanning COLORBLIND fall within the latter. With just one album out, the four piece have already established themselves as rising superstars in the alternative scene. During the lead up to the now released debut, Who Sold You This Truth ++ Was It Yours To Hold, a deep dive into their rapid success and this first record simply makes sense, especially during the biggest moment of their young career.

COLORBLIND first rose to the scene with the lineup it is today in 2018, and since then, the alt rock outfit has released standalone EPs, and singles, but according to frontman Travis Moseley, 2026 is the perfect year for the band to be able to release their first ever album, as they are as prepared for a big release as they ever will be. “Now is the right time really because we’ve been a band for a long time and all we’ve had the resources to do was to just make singles, like we were kind of a local band and all we could afford to do is to work our shifts at work and save up money to make a song and make it.”

Another big part of preparing for such a monumental release is having the backing of a team to motivate you. In this case, Moseley tells Distorted Sound that the first record label deal COLORBLIND have signed was a crucial element.

“We signed with Solid State Records back in 2023 or 2024 and they gave us the resources to make an album, and this is our first shot at doing it, and they’ve been so great to us, and they’ve been really supportive people to have around us. They’re the reason we why we get do this and why it’s right now. We really wanted to take our time and make our debut album when we really felt ready for it.”

Since COLORBLIND have been releasing shorter releases for almost eight years now, it may be surreal for a band with such little releases to reach a milestone such as 590 thousand monthly listeners, but for the four-piece, this is a testament to their passion, dedication and determination. “We never really expected that. Whenever I was first making music, I would I guess you could call it manifesting or whatever it is, but like whenever I would visualise or imagine myself playing shows, the venues I imagined were always small. There’s two sides of it because I knew that there was no other option for me in my life, like this has to be it, but at the same time too, we all just feel so lucky to get to do this. We’re very flattered by it all and stoked to keep going.”

2026 is more than merely the year they are releasing their new album in; it is also the year they will embark on their biggest tour yet. “We’re doing a North American tour with CATCH YOUR BREATH, TX2 and ARANKALAND we’re so excited to do that tour. COLORBLIND and CATCH YOUR BREATH we came out of the same local band scene in Texas together, and so it’s gonna be cool to tour all of America with them, and they’re dear friends of ours. We’re just stoked we get to do it.”

Keeping this in mind, on this specific tour, the band are openers and have the hardest task of all other groups on that tour poster. Crafting a setlist that lasts half an hour. “We’re literally talking about these things right now. It’s hard because I think we have 30 minutes. That’s like seven songs if we cram them into the 30 minutes, and so it is a big conversation because we don’t want to part with older songs that mean so much to us, but it definitely is a tricky thing to figure out, especially with this album as we love all the songs so much. We’ll land on something and figure it out, but it’s a tricky thing.”

A good album flows from beginning to end to create a consistent story or journey, resulting in a consistent atmosphere, something COLORBLIND collectively believe. “We figure out the track list on a vibe. We want it to sonically take you on a journey. It’s not like a concept album where the next song has meaning to the next one, but sonically there are changes and different flavours, and we put certain songs next to certain songs because we thought they flowed well together.”

This is not only the mentality the band has, but the mentality that Moseley himself possesses. “I have an inkling that maybe not now, but maybe in the future, people will want to listen to full works again. Right now everybody loves singles and stuff, but also, vinyl is selling higher than it has in a long time, or maybe ever. Everybody loves vinyl, and the more people will buy vinyl, they’re going to get a record player, and that may start conditioning people to start wanting to hear the full album, and so I definitely think that’s a cool thing to do listening to albums front to back, and maybe that time is upon us again and I think an album is cool when it takes us on a journey that way.”
