ALBUM REVIEW: Who Sold You This Truth ++ Was It Yours To Hold – Colorblind
Rising heavy rock outfit, COLORBLIND, have put out their newest record Who Sold You This Truth ++ Was It Yours To Hold. Since their formation in 2017, the Austin quartet have been steadily building a fanbase through their creative take on the modern heavy rock movement and many an explosive live show, all while retaining a promise to be as brutally honest within their own songwriting, allowing us to see their vulnerable side.
At this point you might be wondering what their signature approach to the modern rock movement might sound like and, in a summary, it’s a form of electronicore. A longer description would be what would happen if that genre were to meet one of many industrial hard rock bands out there today with Kellin Quinn joining the mix somewhere. The latter we bring up as it’s very easy to compare Quinn’s vocal style to that of frontman, Travis Moseley, who shares many of the same qualities.
Setting the scene is opening track, Pressure, which starts out with ethereal electronic beats before kicking off fully by the chorus that, might not be as brutal as one would expect, but it has that high energy you crave. A similar layout is heard on next track, Car Crash, that opens slow before a crash is heard and we head immediately into hard rock. It’s a smooth production with even smoother harmonies heard towards the end that we appreciate.
It’s worth mentioning at this point that the record is 15-tracks-long, and while there are plenty of moments that indeed stand out for all the right reasons, there is a slight glaring issue in some of the songs feeling a little repetitive. That’s not to say it sounds bad, but if you were to listen to certain songs like Royal Blood, Neversleep, Lost In Translation, and Heavy Heart, whilst you’d likely agree they’re solid rock meets electronic pop compositions, you might struggle to differentiate between them if asked.
That being said, there are some standout songs to enjoy here. Let Down is an electronic pop production with lowkey metalcore instrumentals that surprise you towards the end with a sudden heavy section and growls to match. Paradox on the surface has pretty synths and harmonies, but dig deeper and you’ll discover lyrics retaining to mental health, healing and having to face yourself as your own worst enemy. Finally, Cynical is a slow piano focused track that could act as a sister track to the previous song where you are now a witness to someone’s mental struggles.
A decent take on the modern hard rock and metal scene that is pretty and enjoyable, albeit a bit repetitive at points. But it’s hard to stay mad, especially with some of the more standout tracks we’ve highlighted.
