EP REVIEW: The Watcher Of All – Psycroptic
It feels far too long since the release of 2018’s As The Kingdom Drowns and everyone’s favourite Tasmanian’s don’t intend to keep us waiting for new material. PSYCROPTIC are blessing us with an early Christmas present in what is to be considered a bridge between releases entitled The Watcher Of All, out now via Agonia Records/Prosthetic Records which will assist in tiding us over until their next full length effort penned for a 2021 release.
A Fragile Existence slowly lures you in with a subtle introduction before resuming their signature brand of fury as frenetic drumming and enticing melodies set the tone. Face melting technicality and the caustic barrages of frontman Jason Peppiatt feel like an explosion right down your ear canal. The unfolding chaos unleashed by master orchestrator Joe Haley melds together seamlessly, proving precisely why he is revered as one of the greatest metal guitarists to ever pick up the instrument.
The Watcher Of All makes its predecessor feel like a warm up as David Haley‘s limbs turn into machine guns, rattling off a sea of jaw dropping savagery to coincide with the blistering pacing. The neck snapping groove that comes in tow is the perfect accompaniment to the mesmerizing brutality. Don’t consider getting in its path or you will be mercilessly trampled.
It may sadden some to see this release only contains two tracks but there are more riffs crammed into this duo than some bands manage to handle in an entire album. The Aussie’s have weaponized their already laser focused intensity and somehow managed to make it more potent than ever before. This double barrelled riff assault has a ridiculous level of replayability and does more than just simply whet your appetite. 2021 cannot come soon enough.
Rating: 9/10
