ALBUM REVIEW: Eviscerate – Eidola

Salt Lake City’s EIDOLA have acquired an admirable fanbase since their inception in 2011. However, 2021’s The Architect release was met with mixed reactions, with some declaring the band were retreading previous steps. Poised to correct the naysayers is its follow-up, Eviscerate which is due for release on April 12th via Blue Swan/Rise Records. Will this effort be the start of a new chapter?

Atman- An Introduction To Suffering opens proceedings with a sombre reality check reaffirming the inevitability of war and death – a topic which is particularly prominent in current events. This leads into the vicious intensity of A Bridge Of Iron And Blood. Explosive vocal work joins forces with proficient instrumentation to provide a colourful yet deadly soundscape. No Weapon Formed Shall Prosper continues the poignant subject matter, blending it with energetic, infectious layering that harbours an abundance of dynamic diversity to lure you into the unfurling narrative. Who Of You Will Persevere offers up a round of frenetic drumming and an addictive, anthemic tempo to keep the momentum rolling.

The Weight Of Sin takes a darker, more dramatic turn whilst maintaining that boisterous swagger. Flamboyant flourishes are littered throughout the powerful powderkeg. He Who Pulls The Strings Ties A Knot commences with a graceful, sleek tone which soon erupts into punchy, polished lead sequences and confidently executed chorus elements. Fistful Of Hornets reprises the combustible carnage with fiery, swift drum/riff combinations. God Takes Away Everything opts for solemn, emotive melodies that possess relatable sentiments of internal struggle.

Ziggurat exhibits a buoyant, endearing pacing full of deep immersive moments that will undoubtedly strike a chord with many a listener. Ashes In Gehinnom comes charging in with aggressive exuberance, intertwining catchy grooves with an impactful, surging flow. Kali Yuga brings an alluring wave of peace, meticulously meshing dual vocals alongside snappy intricacies. As we approach the closing stages, Golgotha Compendium- Fith Temple displays a determined, gritty demeanour armed with provocative soundbites and animated artistry. Ecclesiastes- The Burden Of Wisdom bids us farewell with a short but calming piano excerpt to contemplate the journey we have just experienced.

Eviscerate is a bold, ambitious statement piece which implores you to explore through its rich tapestry to uncover the powerfully topical lyrical voyage held within. EIDOLA may have been accused of comfortable linearity in previous efforts but this release has definitely silenced the doubters with its wealth of experimentation, allowing the band’s creativity to shine at every given opportunity. Eviscerate is an impressive stage in their evolution and will hopefully be the catalyst for an exciting, prosperous future.
