ALBUM REVIEW: Grand Serpent Rising – Dimmu Borgir
If absence makes the heart grow fonder, then the loyal fanbase of Norwegian legends DIMMU BORGIR will be champing at the bit to feast upon the freshly released Grand Serpent Rising, their first full-length album since 2018’s Eonian. Available now via Nuclear Blast Records, their tenth studio album is more than worth the wait.
Tridentium grasps your attention with a dramatic, orchestral opening and the unnerving indicators of a brewing storm. An accompanying spoken word segment sets the scene. Ascent bursts into life with the iconic raspy screams of frontman Stian ‘Shagrath’ Thoresen and racing blastbeats. Emphatic hooks and slick lead sequences soon follow. As Seen in the Unseen commences with haunting melodies and a menacing, theatrical stride. As momentum gathers waves of aggressive riffing surge forth. Intricate, symphonic layers join the expansive soundscape.
The Qryptfarer is as infectious as it is intense. The twisting and turning tempo keeps you guessing as it forges an unpredictable path equipped with enticing instrumentation, particularly the proficient piano placement. Ulvgjeld & Blodsodel witnesses the return of their native tongue to the lyrical front. The gradual, building overture is embellished with lavish orchestration before transitioning into vibrant riff work. A clever choice for the leading single release. Repository of Divine Transmutation welcomes you with a folk-like acoustic arrangement which is quickly swept aside in preference of explosive extravagance.
Slik Minnes en Alkymist grips you with its invigorating, energetic nature. The blend of light and dark elements provides an intriguing proposition. Phantom of the Nemesis is equally as fascinating. The formidable, groove-ridden stomp is devilishly addictive. The Exonerated charges onwards with swift drumming and vigorous riffing. Uplifting solo flourishes leave their impressive mark.
Recognizant possesses unwavering potency. Rapid shredding forms the backbone of the powerful structure. At the Precipice of Convergence sustains the heightened velocity as frenetic energy trades the spotlight with cleverly constructed rhythms. Shadows of a Thousand Perceptions opts for bewitching melodies and alluring choral accompaniments. The enchanting, evil undertones are especially engaging. Gjǫll utilises captivating instrumental swathes to bring this journey to a satisfying conclusion.
Grand Serpent Rising contains all the signature hallmarks which have brought DIMMU BORGIR such reverence throughout their storied career whilst still driving their creative prowess forward into new territories. Fredrik Nordström has once again worked his magic, equipping this release with razor sharp production, allowing the expertly crafted instrumentation to shine through. The Norwegian’s have never shied away from giving the fans bang for their buck on the runtime front but the full 69 minutes may challenge the ever dwindling attention span of the social media generations. That talented troupe clearly still have plenty of fuel left in the tank.
Rating: 9/10
