ALBUM REVIEW: Happier? – Volumes

A lot of events have unfolded in the world of VOLUMES since the release of 2017’s Different Animals – some good and some not so good – but rather than dwell on those in too much detail, the band welcomed back original vocalist Michael Barr, an unexpected but welcome return which was ushered in by the crushing standalone single holywater back in 2020. The band have just recently unveiled their highly anticipated follow-up, entitled Happier?, which is available now via Fearless Records, and they have never sounded so impressive.

FBX instils a tense, unnerving atmosphere that combines with sharp vocal deliveries and hefty riffing. VOLUMES mean business. As the track progresses it begins to pick up the tempo. Malevolent dives headfirst into a pile of groove-ridden hooks and a bouncy pacing that is an instant adrenaline rush. The crushing intensity refuses to subside for even a moment. Bend keeps you guessing as vibrant melodies come surging to the forefront. Soaring chorus lines seep smoothly into your bloodstream.

Get Enough combines the best of what we have experienced thus far into a powerhouse of euphoric tones and infectious beats. Don’t be surprised if this track is stuck in your head long after you’ve finished listening. Lets Me Down kicks the syncopated intricacy up a notch, accompanied by invigorating drum work and cathartic vocal lines. The emotive narrative is particularly captivating. Man On Fire continues in the footsteps of its predecessor by hitting you with waves of unforgiving riffing. The aggressive nature and swarming atmospherics provide one of the most irresistible offerings this release has within its chapters.

Weighted keeps the momentum flowing with undeniable hooks, skin searing screams and comforting clean elements. The bursts of complexity stop the track or the listener falling into any element of complacency. See You Again fuses an uplifting mood with something on the grittier side of the spectrum. Formidable vocal work commands the spotlight. Into You (Hurt) is equally as potent, the ominous tinges within the riffing adding a layer of intrigue to proceedings and perfectly complimenting the vocal transitions. All hell breaks loose as the track passes the midway point and the mood descends into a darker realm. Void keeps the enticing beats coming thick and fast, with another impactful chorus line amplifying the track. Last but certainly not least is title track Happier?, which is arguably the most comprehensive piece on offer. Accessible, relatable tones really resonate and provide a place of solace within the crazy world which we all inhabit. A fitting closing statement.

The level of consistency and quality held inside Happier? is pretty remarkable considering the sheer level of turmoil that VOLUMES have had to endure to get to this stage. As the old cliché adequately states ‘anything worth having is worth fighting for’ and it has certainly brought the best out of this group of musicians. If you were ever in any doubt concerning the longevity of the band then hopefully this release will assist in revitalising your hope for a fruitful future.
