ALBUM REVIEW: Into The Raging Sea – Broadside

A decade under the belt for a band is an amazing feat, so to keep up with the changing times and the popular zeitgeist is difficult with newcomers rising up. For BROADSIDE, their third album is a progression forward in sound, style, and maturity, and Into The Raging Sea attempts to show that the band can take on more serious themes. How did they do?

Impressive work, as a matter of fact! With music more about the strength of relationships, struggling with bipolar disorder, and finding strength in themselves, it’s a very interesting exploration the band takes with this album. The lyrics are very realistic, simplistic, but can also be harsh, vibrant, and passionate. Especially in songs like Clarity, Seasons, and Burning At Both Ends, the lyrics are very expressive and open to show the listener about everything. It’s obvious that these are personal to the band, and are poetically explained for their audience. It’s very down to earth and refreshing for a band to take on.

On the music side, there’s a great variety of beautiful riffs, steady bass guitar, and amazing drums, especially in The Setting Sun, the drum part in that song is absolutely fantastic! Nights Alone gives off ALL TIME LOW vibes musically, but obviously done in a Broadside way, making for a very fun track. The music in tracks like Overdramatic, Heavenly, Dancing On The Ceiling (With You), and The Setting Sun have a fun and jammy sound to them, very vibrant in melody, harmony, and musical accompaniment, something that is hard to do consistently, but the band accomplish throughout the album. From beginning to end, the quality of music on display, in music, lyrics, and vocals, it’s all amazing to hear.

Overall, Into The Raging Sea is an amazing accomplishment of hard work and talent put together to make something incredible. Songs like Heavenly and Clarity should be noted as being absolutely fantastic to listen to, but all of the songs are great to hear, and this album is a delight to listen to. Strong work from BROADSIDE, with this more mature direction, only the best can come from them in the future.
