ALBUM REVIEW: Meet The Loveless – The Loveless

What do you get when Marc Almond of SOFT CELL and Neal X of SIQUE SIQUE SPUTNIK form a garage rock band? Well THE LOVELESS of course! Taking it back to their teenage years, their new album Meet The Loveless features 13 rock ‘n’ roll tunes inspired by the music they listened to when they were in their youth. Think ALICE COOPER, IGGY POP and DAVID BOWIE, a true trip down the road of nostalgia.

Opening track Wild In The Streets begins with a classic beat mixed with a rolling riff that takes you right back, followed by Almond’s recognisable tones. The song does feel as if it’s been plucked straight out of the classic rock hay days, adding some interesting elements into the mix like trumpet backing. Next track Putty In Your Hands sounds like it could have been taken off of an 80s film soundtrack. With a young and playful feel to it, this song is quite easy to sing along to after the first verse and chorus. It’s fun and catchy, but an added punch in the latter half could have added another layer to it.

To add to the star studded line up of the band, why not have a track featuring Glen Matlock of the SEX PISTOLS as well? That’s what they do on third track Pills, and the riffs throughout the album are pretty groovy, almost egging the listener on to have a little boogie. This release sounds like it has come straight out of the late 70s, and that’s because the band were all fully established in the rock music scene at that time. Their ability to create this familiar sounding classic rock but from a modern perspective is impressive. You can definitely hear some of the inspirations behind the songs, picking up on familiar sounding elements that encourage you to reminisce.

Overall, Meet The Loveless features a whole lot of memorable and nostalgic rhythms and tones. The album transports you back in time and does so in a modern way, without taking away from the vintage sound. This is definitely an album for those who want some more classic rock in their lives or to relive their youth, but with a few added twists along the way. It might not be for everyone, but it’s got heart and passion behind it throughout.
