ALBUM REVIEW: Moongazer – Tenebra

The Italian powerhouse of a psych rock outfit known as TENEBRA aren’t ones to mess about. With a musical background in hardcore and post-hardcore which has been drenched in the fuzz and psychedelics of the underground proto metal scene of the 1960s and 70s, this band have a no holds barred policy when it comes to their sound. Moongazer sees them at their vigorous best, offering up nine stunning tracks that explore the outer reaches of psychedelic stoner rock, pushing the boundaries of the genre with big riffs, mighty whiskey soaked vocal melodies and mesmeric psychedelic atmospheres. Despite this being the band’s sophomore album, they are definitely going to leave and indelible mark on the genre with their fresh and exciting approach.

It is fair to say that TENEBRA are not ones to sit idly and rely on cliched SABBATH-isms to do the work for them. Whilst the album does live within the realm of stoner rock, there is more to this record than meets the eye. Given that Claudio (bass), Emilio (guitar) and Mesca (drums) have a background in hardcore and post-hardcore there is something about how these songs are constructed that breaks away from the confines of traditional psychedelic and stoner rock. Pushing the boundaries with this new perspective and fresh approach is what makes this album stand out amongst the rest.

There is a pinpoint accuracy to the album’s dynamics, yet it still feels free flowing and full of twists and turns whilst being intensely atmospheric and emotive. Coupled with the gritty yet soulful voice of vocalist Silvia and you are presented with something truly unique. Simply put, Moongazer is an exciting, intriguing and enigmatic album from start to finish. The band know when to ramp it up and when to bring it down, something that they do effortlessly throughout the album’s run time. There are so many facets to Moongazer, deep multi textural layers will keep you coming back for more and finding something new beneath each layer with every listen through. It is finely balanced between floating atmospheres and earthy, groove filled riffs.

Whilst there are nods to the greats like BLACK SABBATH, PINK FLOYD (more specifically during the introduction to album closer Moon Maiden) and the like, ultimately TENEBRA do things their own way. This ambitious and determined attitude combined with their instrumental virtuosity and song-writing talent is what makes Moongazer a landmark moment in this band’s career. As you journey through this album you become privy to its enigmatic and mysterious charm, as it gradually yields its secrets to you.

Heavy Crusher lulls you into the album, giving you a false sense of security with its dreamy start before it thrusts you straight into the fire with Silvia’s vocals pummelling you with full force. This ultimately sets the tone for the album, it is a marvellously rich tapestry of music. Heavy Crusher is backed up by Cracked Path, a song that you will find it hard not to headbang to as its crushing riffs and catchy groove lock in and double down on your skull. Black Lace and Carry My Load are brooding, monolithic ballads packed to the brim with fervent and passionate soul, grit and power that stirs your emotions into a frenzy.

Winds Of Change sits perfectly in the centre of the album and takes it back down to beautiful, bluesy psych rock basics. With dreamy solos and hypnotic atmospheres it is a brief moment of calm before the fuzzing thunder comes around again with Stranded. Space Child is the most surprising track on Moongazer; whilst immersed in a certified stoner rock anthem, you’ll be hit right out of left field with and incredible saxophone solo from the dark depths of the tack. Closing the album with Moon Maiden, this one sees the band channel their inner Dark Side Of The Moon-era PINK FLOYD before ramping it up and giving this magnificent album the illustrious finale it deserves.

Moongazer is without a doubt one of the most exciting psychedelic stoner albums to come out this year. Packed full of heart, soul, passion and determination TENEBRA will certainly be making a significant name for themselves. All the world has to do is stop, listen, fall in love and bask in Tenebrous glory. Moongazer è eccezionale e magnifico.
