EP REVIEW: Back With Another One – Blackgold

Anonymous nu-metallers BLACKGOLD have definitely caused a stir in the music industry since their formation back in 2022. In just this short period, the mysterious quintet have toured with big names such as SKINDRED and LIMP BIZKIT and performed at festivals like DownloadGraspop and Rock For People. They’ve also graced many a playlist on Spotify and Tidal and have successfully collaborated with HYRO THE HERO and FEVER 333.

BLACKGOLD are set to reveal their third self-released EP Back With Another One this Friday, allowing the group to experiment further with their sound. The opener is International Touring, a 43-second introduction comprising a humorous, muffled phone call which certainly builds excitement for what’s to come. The first song proper is the title track Back With Another One. From the outset vocalist Spookz sounds pretty identical to LIMP BIZKIT‘s Fred Durst. It is instantly catchy from the first second, making you bop your head with immediate effect and getting the record off to a great start.

Social Blackout almost has a KORN feel about it due to the instrumentals. The lyrics provide a very honest and raw outlook on modern society, discussing the long term effects of the use of technology and how it corresponds to poor mental health, particularly in younger generations. This is a song that needed to be written. One Chance is another LIMP BIZKIT-inspired nu-metal song which is full of gusto, although it isn’t necessarily one which is going to stay in your head.

Today’s My Day is the polar opposite – super catchy and cool. This is where the EP takes a somewhat unexpected turn with Spookz‘s vocals sounding more like MARILYN MANSON. The production makes the track have a creepy feel about it, which is most definitely welcome. Additionally, the chorus is seriously infectious with a bridge that echoes bands such as EMMURE to complete another fantastic track.

The closer is Rains In My Life, which focuses mostly on Spookz‘s rap-like vocal style. It is another snapshot into the trials and tribulations of modern life, something that a lot of us can relate to. “I’m pretty sure that our lives are staged / Living in a shit street on a minimum wage / Life expectancy of 52 / I’m pretty sure they don’t give a fuck about me and you” raps Spookz frustratedly – the perfect end to this EP.

It is genuinely hard believe that BLACKGOLD have only been together for two years, as they sound a lot more established than that. It is highly recommended that you check out Back With Another One, as this is an excellent release. The only track that lets this EP down is One Chance, but it is easy to forgive them for that as this is still a great all rounder.

Rating: 9/10

Back With Another One is set for release on May 10th via self-release.
