EP REVIEW: Island. – Daytime TV

Utopia seems to be moving further away from us everyday, which is why we need to take every moment of happiness when we can. For DAYTIME TV, those moments of happiness have created an island paradise ever since their formation in 2020. The Scottish band have been trying to figure put where they fit in the ever-changing musical spectrum. They released their debut album Nothing’s On But Everyone’s Watching in 2022 and have shared the stage with the likes of KAISER CHIEFS and TWO DOOR CINEMA CLUB. Now with the release of their new EP Island., the band are ready to reintroduce themselves to the masses again.

The electronic rock of opening song So Sick sets the stage for this EP. The heavy bass on the verses blends really well with the sing-along choruses, and the band are smart enough to keep the song to just two and a half minutes so the novelty doesn’t wear off. Lost In Tokyo is another electronic rock song with an emphasis on the electronics, showing that the band do not just fit into one genre.

As it’s only five songs long and all of them are quite short, the EP does seem to fly by. Fear is a mid-paced synth-rock song that has an incredibly catchy chorus, whereas Waves is a lighthearted track that breaks up the slightly monotonous electronic rock by leaning more into the rock genre. But it is the closing song, Block Out The Noise that is utterly fantastic and marked out especially by the use of gang vocals.

Island. is a tropical utopia for everyone to escape to. Whilst its electronic rock sound does sometimes get a bit tiresome, DAYTIME TV manage to diversify the sound enough to sustain interest. Furthermore, by sticking to two broad genres, the band keep things interesting and make sure that there is consistency throughout, and it is always clear that they are really enjoying themselves. This is an EP that everyone must have on their summer playlist.
