EP REVIEW: Order Of The Goatlord – The Big Rip
Hailing from the stunningly picturesque and industrial city of Porsgrunn, Norway, skandi/stoner rock quartet THE BIG RIP are set to erupt out of Scandinavia with groove-filled, fuzz-laden riffs that will send a bolt of lighting through your body and get you moving. The band’s debut EP Order Of The Goatlord takes you on a journey into their mystical world of wizards, Scottish cannons and the enigmatic Goatlord himself. THE BIG RIP are a band that takes pride in their live performances and have poured every ounce of blood and sweat into recreating that ferocious energy in the studio. As a result, Order Of The Goatlord is a skull-splitting, anthemic EP.
The EP begins with the beautifully written acoustic intro Nomad. The earthy tones of the acoustic guitar and Danny Valle Johannessen’s soulful vocals set a mystical tone, as throat singing can be heard echoing in the background. After this Order Of The Goatlord properly kicks into gear with the thunderous, bluesy grooves of Goatlord.
From there, the band build momentum and sustain it with ease whilst building anthemic vocal layers over bombastic riffing; this is exemplified on Magus Magus. Despite it only being an EP, the lyrics are intriguing as you get a small taste of the world that THE BIG RIP have created. With that in mind, Mons Meg is the song that leaves you wanting more riffs and fantasy lyrics.
THE BIG RIP have announced themselves with a Norwegian might not seen since the Viking age. Order Of The Goatlord is a passionate, fun and brilliantly put together EP that will satisfy your need for big riffs and wizard lyrics. It also gives us a tantalising glimpse of what the band are capable of, which will leave you wanting significantly more from the Porsgrunn quartet.
