EP REVIEW: Perennial – Sojourner

Since their inception, SOJOURNER have been going from strength to strength with a string of consistent releases that have grown in stature. It came as a shock to see two long standing members leave the fold last year but this has not dampened their optimism as a newly revamped lineup was announced along with the release of a two track mini-ep entitled Perennial which is due for release on June 4th via Napalm Records. Will these tracks give us an indication of where they may be heading next?

Perennial commences with a solemn yet captivating piano sequence which is closely followed by accompanying instrumentation. The track promptly bursts into life with rapid drumming and commanding vocal lines. The slick transitions between aggression and melody are what we have come to expect from SOJOURNER but they still continue to hit that sweet spot. Enticing riffing slots seamlessly into the intricately layered soundscape and the seven minute run time evaporates in what feels like a matter of moments.

Relics Of The Natural Realm allows for the opportunity to close your eyes and listen to the calming sounds of the wind before introducing a subtle but soothing flute section. We also get the chance to witness the talents of newly introduced vocalist Lucia Amelia Emmanueli who possesses the skill to make you hang on every syllable. Emotion pours through her tone and is executed beautifully. As the latter stages approach there is one final flourish of the more extreme side of the bands’ repertoire to add that final impactful exclamation point.

Whilst it is difficult to form a judgement based on the analysis of just two tracks one thing is for certain, SOJOURNER are still confidently firing on all cylinders. There were numerous instances that allowed their faithful fanbase to become acquainted with the new recruits and this offering will hopefully pose as a satisfactory stopgap until a more extensive release can be produced.

Rating: 8/10
