EP REVIEW: Pharos – Ihsahn

COVID-19 may have put a spanner in many well laid plans this year but one individual who is refusing to let the current climate get in the way of his creativity is the inimitable IHSAHN. Earlier this year he wowed us with his stunning Telemark EP and on September 11th he will follow up with another release in the shape of Pharos which will be released via Candlelight Records. With the previous release being particularly aggressive and dark in tone will this follow suit?

Losing Altitude commences with a sombre, clean tone and inviting, emotive vocals, an almost polar opposite to its predecessor. The melodies are incredibly infectious and lure you with their harmonious charm. Chunky guitar riffs and orchestral flourishes are introduced to further supplement the unfolding dramatic vibe. Spectre At The Feast follows in similar nature with captivating piano sections and alluring vocal lines. The chorus and latter lead elements are intoxicating and wouldn’t feel out of place slipped into a GHOST track. Pharos gently flows along in a particularly melancholy nature, utilising subtle yet evocative instrumentation. As the track begins to build a swelling intensity makes its presence felt, sending a shiver down your spine.

The decision to cover Roads by UK’s own PORTISHEAD was certainly an appropriate choice as it slots into the mood already established thus far. IHSAHN‘s vocal talents perfectly portray the melodic vocal delicacy of the original. What proves to be quite an unexpected curve ball is also covering Manhattan Skyline by fellow Norwegian’s A-HA alongside his long time musical compatriot Einar Solberg of LEPROUS. Whilst being surprising it is also a testament to just how talented both these individuals are at their craft. Performing a rendition of a synth-pop number but managing to make it their own in such a tasteful fashion.

Pharos shows a very different side to IHSAHN than what we have come to know over the years. Putting his signature venomous screams to one side and focusing on offering up beautifully poignant lyrical passages which are immediately accessible. Being able to construct releases from either side of the spectrum may seem like quite the undertaking but both have been executed in impressive fashion. IHSAHN‘s creativity seems to know no bounds and that is what makes him one of the most revered musicians that has ever graced our presence. It’s a mouth watering prospect wondering what he will conjure up next.

Rating: 9/10
