EP REVIEW: scorpio fever – Dirt Flirt

Alternative pop project, DIRT FLIRT, have put out their newest EP scorpio fever. The project, created by multi-instrumentalist and self-proclaimed ‘ex-emo’, Kit Eaton-Kent, centres around a sound that is intriguing and attention grabbing whilst maintaining a brutally honest edge, a fact that’s more so clear on this release given it centres around the concept of emotions relating to obsession and vulnerability. A peel back of the many layers when it comes to those feelings one could say.

Setting the scene is opening track don’t tell anyone that kicks off with moody pop-rock synths blended with instrumentals that offer a shoegaze twist, giving the song a dreamlike quality. It’s intriguing, it draws you in, and has you very much in a state where you only want to hear more. An immediate fact about this record is how infused in electronic sounds this EP is, whether creating a sort of distorted effect over vocals and traditional instruments or being front and centre with pop beats and synths, it creates a moody, dark atmosphere that you can’t help but be enticed by. And a conclusion you’ll reach when you listen to play pretend is that you cannot put DIRT FLIRT into a box.

focus on u moves away from a mysterious atmosphere and this time explores more upbeat sounds with bouncy segments that you can’t help but bop along to. Granted, the shrill pop synths might be a little off-putting for those not expecting to hear them but at no point do you find yourself wanting to pause the track and, in our experience, getting to the end you find yourself in love with the entire song.

The final two songs are more on the moody side, or maybe it’s more accurate to say it’s something you can just chill and vibe to. honest makes you want to pause and sway and concludes with a stunning electronic breakdown that feels like an accurate representation of conflicting emotions clashing together, whilst high horse is more on the side of being chill. Pleasant, but maybe not as memorable despite the integration of drum and bass.

scorpio fever is a decent EP from DIRT FLIRT that allows you to explore emotions whilst also have a little dance to. A perfect escape from reality one might say.
