EP REVIEW: Senses (Part Two) – Derange

The field of tech metal has began to flourish in impressive fashion with its reach spanning far and wide and growing ever more expansive as the years elapse. One particular shining talent that has grasped the attention of the genre’s adoring assembly of fans is London based ‘sassrock’ collective DERANGE. The quintet turned heads with their initial instalment entitled Senses Part One last year and are looking to capitalise on this momentum by promptly following it up with Senses Part Two which is due for release on May 15th. Will this effort be equally as satisfying as its predecessor?

The Hunted dives straight in with vibrant, energised guitar work and punchy drum beats to set the tone. The soaring vocals of Cat Pereira provide a further uplifting and addictive quality to the mix. Forgotten introduces a jabbing heaviness whilst still maintaining swathes of melody and a buoyant tempo. This track possesses a particularly cathartic nature as effective screaming sections and appealing eccentricities add additional impact.

Take It All treads a different path as a minimalist, calming intro combined with emotive vocals offers a captivating soundscape. As the track progresses it bursts into life in a glorious crescendo of infectious passion topped off with a spine chilling guitar solo. Falling Awake kicks into gear with alluring hooks and a heavy hitting stride that is bolstered by punchy bass lines. The twisting and turning flow and dramatic prose keep you on the edge of your seat. We Are lets the simmering intensity boil over as bursts of aggression and intricate riffing tussle with compelling melodies, bringing this release to a fascinating conclusion.

Senses Part One set the standard but Senses Part Two has witnessed DERANGE hit their stride and march proudly onward. The tracks display a variety of diverse personality but all mesh together to provide a particularly enjoyable and accessible end product which will definitely have listeners coming back for another taste.
